ROBERT J. LUDWIG
1918-2011
Robert J. Ludwig, age 92 of Ardsley Road in Schenectady, NY died on Tuesday morning, January 18, 2011 at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY.
Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY and was the son of the late Samuel and Jennie Altman Ludwig. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Columbia University by the age
of 19. He served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II and attained the rank
of Master Sergeant. After his service, Bob resumed his studies at Western Reserve
University where he became a certified social worker. He arrived in Schenectady in
1948, and was married for 36 years to his beloved wife Dorothy Seaman, of blessed
Memory. He was Program Director for the SchenectadyJCC for 10 years before
returning to teach in the Schenectady schools. He taught for 39 years, acting as
department chair and district supervisor of Foreign Languages, and Executive
Director of the NYS Association of Foreign Language Teachers.
Bob's interfaith and community work include leadership roles which have made a
great impact on the community. He served as President of the Council Committee
of Christians and Jews and the Interfaith Community of Schenectady, and
served as Vice President of Programming. He was the Community Relations Chair and
Past president of United Jewish Federation. Bob also helped organize the
Presbyterian-Jewish Dialogue. He was President of the Schenectady School District
Foundation and served on the Board of Trustees of Temple Gates of Heaven. Bob's awards and honors were numerous; some of them include NY Teacher of the Year, Schenectady Patroon, and the French Parliament's
Chevalier, Officer and Commaiideur of the Order of the Academic Palms, James
Stamper Award of the Schenectady Interfaith Community, the Schenectady County
Human Rights Commission Award, the first Anshei Chesed Award of the Capital
District Hadassah, and Spirit of Healing from St. Clare's Hospital as well as the Bishop Howard J. Hubbard From Fear to Friendship Award
Bob is survived by his brother, Bert Ludwig and wife Phyllis of NYC and Boca Raton, Florida.
Services at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue Schenectady, NY on Friday January 21, 2011 at 12 noon.. announced. Interment will be in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery on Watt Street in Schenectady.
