My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and all of his dear friends. Mr, or should I say Monsieur Ludwig was my French teacher at Mont Pleasant High School and I graduated in 1969. If there was one teacher that I remember the most for inspiration, it was him. I just recently found his email and was going to write to him letting him know my life would have been totally empty without his guidance and support. I shall cherish my memories of him forever. Rest in peace my dear teacher. I will miss you so very much! With great admiration, Allan France

My condolences to Mr. Ludwig's family. Mr. Ludwig interviewed me for my very first post-college job---junior highschool French teacher in Schenectady. I'll never forget that interview at 108 Union St. (the old pillared building)---all in French---very intimidating. Mr. Ludwig hired me, and that was the "key" to the next 30+ years of my life!! He was always a very present & understanding "boss" & mentor. I am grateful that I knew him! Sincerely, Lorraine Gormley

Mr. Ludwig was an extraordinary teacher. His unswerving dedication to fostering excellence both in his students' mastery of the French language and in their appreciation of the nuances of French history and culture not only produced unparalleled successes in the classroom, but gave us all a broad base of knowledge upon which to experience a lifetime of pleasure exploring and enjoying France and embarking upon the study of other languages and cultures with comparable zeal and attention to detail. He set a very high standard, for which we are all very much in his debt.

My best wishes to Bob's family. I remember Bob from all his work with my mother, Vivienne Anderson, from the time I was a young boy up through our efforts to keep her programs and causes alive after her death. Bob was a dedicated champion of programs that brought out the best qualities in people, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. The many whose lives he touched will keep his memory alive.

J had the honor to have known Bob for many years when I was a member, and, later on, Board member of NYSAFLT. Bob was one of the greatest men I ever known. He was a hard worker, and a gentleman. We shared good times together, when we were in France, we went on a beautiful boat ride in Lyon. I will always remember his kindness and I shall miss him. Jacqueline Friedman

The name of Robert Ludwig was certainly familiar to this languages major at Albany State years ago. His service to the profession and the community deserved the honors he received. Please accept my condolences on the loss of a fine person.

Mr. Ludwig made a lasting impression on me and helped to shape my educational path, personal interests, and my career choices. Never underestimate the power and influence a teacher can have on his or her students. Mr. Ludwig a force for good and an inspiration. Everyone has had one teacher that stood above all the rest and left a lasting influence on one's life. For me, that teacher was Robert Ludwig. From him, I not only learned French language and culture, but the love of learning itself. As he mentored me in my own path into teaching, I learned more than the art of teaching, but the "heart of the teacher" -- who always went the extra mile for a struggling student, who was patient in the face of frustration, and regarded each person with ultimate respect. Robert Ludwig represented the very best of humanity -- in his deep faith, his compassion for all people, his untiring energy always dedicated to building a better world. Thank you, Mr. Ludwig, for enriching my life and the lives of countless others. May you rest in the peace of God, whom you served so well.

Mr. Ludwig, as I always knew him, was one of the most inspiring, uplifting and fascinating people I have ever had the honor to know. No one celebrated life or encouraged those he met to share the sheer joy of living more than he. He showed through his long life that giving is what matters, that sharing, be it knowledge, charity or simply kindness, is what we are meant to do. The many lives he touched, the countless souls he helped to soar, the quiet help offered those less fortunate: these are his gifts, his legacy. I was never more proud than when he asked me, a speck compared to his magnificence, to write a letter supporting his nomination as New York State Teacher of the Year, an award he so justly deserved and was granted. His light shines on forever in so many, and I am so grateful for the time he shared with me.

During his long and productive life, Bob contributed so much in so many ways to the community. As a language teacher I can say that he was a role model to us all. He provided wisdom and continuity to the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. He inspired and encouraged us to persevere in our efforts to provide strong foreign language programs to the students of New York. I would like to live my later years as Bob did, active until the end. He has a special place in my heart.
