Col. Seymour Dondes of Troy, NY died peacefully with family at his side in his home on January 9, 2010. He was born in New York City to Reuben and Bessie Dondes. Col. Dondes attended the Boys High School of New York City, Brooklyn College for his BA and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ( R.P.I.) for his MS and PhD in Chemistry.
Col. Dondes enlisted in the Army and served with distinction in the Signal Corps in both the European Theatre and North Africa during WWII. Upon returning to the United States, he courted and married Gloria From and moved to various military bases. Col. Dondes transferred from active Army service to the reserves to pursue his graduate degrees at R.P.I. where he also served as an ROTC instructor. He then pursued a long and distinguished career in academia and research at R.P.I., becoming a full professor, producing many patents and papers, and performing important research for the Atomic Energy Commission.
Col. Dondes was a member of Beth Tephilah and had personal interest ranging from photography to interior design.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria, his son Robert J. Dondes, his daughter-in-law Sharon Dondes, and their children Shoshana and Gabriella Dondes of Baltimore, MD, his daughter Yvie J. Dondes of Troy, NY, his daughter Hillary Dondes Barr, his son-in-law Andrew Barr, and their children Sydney and Griffin Barr of Fall City, WA, and his sister Estelle Hoffman of Queens, New York and her family.
Memorial services will be held at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 10:30am. Interment will follow at 12:30pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY. The period of mourning will be observed at the Dondes residence in Troy, NY on Tuesday following the service of interment in accordance with religious and family traditions.
