I have been living abroad for the past 24 years and during this time I've met many people who I would consider to be 'acquaintances.'
Allen and I first met one summer afternoon in 1990. He had joined our group of mutual friends to attend an outdoor concert on Pearl Street. He befriended me as if I had always been one of the gang. There and then I recognized Allen's generosity of friendship. And despite long absences of our paths crossing over the years, his friendship always prevailed. He had proved to be more than a mere acquaintance, he was a friend.
I am not one who can say I knew Allen best. Nevertheless, I was fortunate to have known Allen for one of the things he did best; offering genuine friendship.
After a 15 year loss of contact between Allen and myself ; despite his health being frail at the time ; and thanks to our mutual friend Julie, I had the opportunity to visit Allen last October. Once again he generously offered his friendship welcoming me to his home. I am grateful he granted me that opportunity.
My most sincere condolences to Allen's family and to those closest to him. Allen was a friend to us all .... he and his friendship will be very much missed.

Dear Allen,
You are a part of my childhood memories that I will cherish forever. I will never forget the time when we lived in the old farmhouse in Schenectady. This was back in or around 1976 or 1977.I remember leaving for school one day and it was snowing heavily outside. We had a snow storm the night before so the ground was covered with snow. Before I left for the school bus stop that morning, my mother made me put on this ugly looking plaid reversible jacket that she had just bought for me. As a thirteen year old junior high school girl, style was everything to me. I was definitely NOT wearing that jacket under any circumstances! Well of course my mother would not here of it. She had spent a lot of money on that jacket, not to mention it was cold and snowing outside. According to her, I was wearing it no matter what! Well needless to say I left that cold morning and walked down that long driveway on my way to school with that ugly jacket on. When I got out of sight of my mother who had been watching me from the front door, I found the biggest snow bank and started digging a hole in it to bury that jacket ! Upon doing so, I heard a car slowly driving past me but then came to a sudden stop , rolled down the car window and asked "what are you doing"? Well that person was you. You told me it was o.k., not to worry as you would not tell my mother. You told me to get in the car and you would drive me to my bus stop. I'll always remember that story. Some things always stick out from your childhood memories as does the first day I met you. We were living on Clinton Ave. in Albany, back in the late 1960's. I was just a small child back then but remember certain things so vividly. It was Christmas and my mother introduced you to me as her new friend Allen. I remember we wrapped a gift for you and put it under our tree. It was a new pair of shoes. I remember so clearly you sitting under the tree and opening your gift with a big smile on your face. I will always remember you Allen, as you were a very important part of our lives at one time. I'll never forget the day you and my mother got married. I was so happy for you and her both and I got to be the maid of honor. Like the time you came out to California for a visit in the early 1980's. You took me along with your friends to the beach all day. We went ocean jet skiing then to a nice dinner and danced all night! You always knew how to have fun! I am sorry I never got to see you during one of my visits back home in New York. I am so sorry and sad to hear of your passing ! Please know I will never forget you. You will always be in my memories. God bless you and may you rest in peace. With love always, Renee
