Obituary of Joshua Kagan

JOSHUA "CHICKIE" KAGAN 1936- 2009 Marietta, Georgia Joshua " Chickie" Kagan, beloved husband, father, and grandpa, passed away suddenly on Friday morning September 4, 2009 at age 73 while enjoying his favorite game of golf with a good friend near his home in Marietta, Georgia. He was born in Albany, NY in 1936 where in 1957 he married his high school sweetheart Sharon Goodman with whom he shared more than 50 happy years of marriage. He and Sharon raised their 2 sons Jeffrey and Howard in Albany before moving to Marietta, Georgia in 1981. Josh was the son of the late Benzion and Masha Kagan of Albany, NY and the devoted son-in-law of the late Meyer and Ethel Goodman of Colonie, NY. For almost 25 years he owned and operated Kagans Kosher Meats, a kosher meat market in Albany NY serving kosher homes and institutions throughout the capital district, continu ing a family tradition begun by his beloved father Benzion and beloved oldest brother, the late Myer Kagan of Albany. In 1981 he began a successful career in advertising sales which continued until his recent retireme nt. Chickie was a long time member of Temple Israel in Albany, a member of Albany City Lodge # 540 Knights of Pythias in Albany, and the Independent Benevolent Society in Albany. He was also a dedicated member and gabbi at Congregation Etz Chaim in Marietta, Georgia where he faithfully participated in the daily minion for over 25 years. Mr. Kagan was also a Veteran serving his country during the Korean War. Chickie is survived by his wife, Sharon Goodman Kagan, his older son Jeffrey Kagan and Jeffrey's wife Deborah of Marietta, Georgia and his younger son Howard Kagan and Howard's wife Janet of Manhattan, NY. He is also survived by his brother David Kagan of Florida, and his 3 sisters, Marion (Zecil) Hoorwitz of Schenectady, NY, Judith Prince of Englewood, New Jersey and Rebecca Wilson of Albany, NY. He was the grandfather of 6 wonderful kids, Jason, Adam, Jennifer, Maxwell, Everett and Olivia Kagan. He also leaves many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, an aunt, and many wonderful friends in Albany, Marietta and Florida. Services will be held at the Levine Memorial Chapel 649 Washington Avenue in Albany, NY on Monday September 7, 2009 at 11:00am. Interment will follow in the Independent Benevolent Cemetery in Guilderland, NY, after which the family will be receiving friends and relatives at Temple Israel 600 New Scotland Avenue in Albany until 4:00pm. The family will continue to receive friends and relatives at the home of Paul and Elaine Scher, 10 Fairway Cou rt in Albany, NY on Monday from 6 to 9 pm and on Tuesday from 12 noon to 8:00pm. On Wednesday from 1pm to 8pm, the family will receive friends and relatives at Josh and Sharon's home at 2080 Kincaid Cove in Marietta, Georgia.
