Seymour Bieber passed away Monday, August 24, 2009 at the age of 87. He was born on October 5, 1921 and was the son of the late Hyman and Pauline Bieber. Mr. Bieber was predeceased, in 1995, by the love of his life, his wife, Rebecca Bieber. They had been together since their teenage years. He retired in 1995 from his position as Chief Court Attorney after 46 years in Manhattan Supreme Court. A World War II Army veteran who held undergraduate, Juris Doctor and master's degrees from New York University and its School of Law, Mr. Bieber was particularly proud of his years as a special referee with authority to hear and decide cases. One of his most important was precedent- setting when handed down in 1961-the first decision to permit a police officer to obtain a disability pension because of mental and emotional distress. He also wrote numerous articles on such topics as summary and declaratory judgments and psychiatry and the law, along with a primer for shorthand reporters.
Mr. Bieber enjoyed his retirement years volunteering in the second grade classes of Pinebush Elementary School in Guilderland, New York.
Devoted to his family, Mr. Bieber leaves behind his sons, Michael and Eric, their wives, Carole and Susan, and his beloved grandchildren, Jordan, Alexa, Nicole and David.
Services at the Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla, NY on Wednesday August 26, 2009 at 11:45am The period of mourning will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the home of Michael and Carole Bieber, 273 Longhouse Lane in Guilderland, NY. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Seymour in a special way may make a memorial contribution to the Special Olympics North America 4004 Barrett Drive, Suite 206 Raleigh, NC 27609.
