Cecile S. Olian, age 90 of Heritage Road in Guilderland, NY died on Wednesday morning November 26, 2008 at the home of her daughter Barbara and son in law Dr. Michael Scher. Cecile was born 10/16/1918 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of Minna and David Susnow
She was a baker par excellance, seamstress, designing and making her own clothes , jewelry maker and painter. Her lace, cream cheese, poppy, mandel breit and other cookies and cakes have been coveted and devoured by all. She graduated from NYU as an accountant and she later earned a Masters degree in education from Fordham University. She taught 3rd grade in the Bayview Avenue School, Freeport, NY at the beginning of bussing and integration of children. She was a most effective and caring educator for 20 years, having retired in 1982.
Cecile was married 59 years to her sweetheart, Harvey Olian until his passing August , 2001, at that time she moved to Albany and enjoyed membership at Congregation Ohav Shalom. Both in education , Harvey and Cecile enjoyed boating from Long Island through Canadian waterways, making good friends and entertaining relatives throughout each summer.
She is Loving Mother of Barbara Scher and her husband Dr. Michael Scher of Slingerlands, NY and Dr. David Olian and. Carol Leo of Moorestown, New Jersey and sister of Gloria Simson (late Gerry) of Guilderland, NY. She was predeceased by sister, Dana Vittor (Sidney). Cherished grandmother of Jeremy and Daniel (Aliza) Scher and Matthew and Jesse Olian, and beloved aunt to Maxine, , David, Lisa, Ken, David and spouses.
Services at the Mt. Ararat Cemetery Farmingdale, New York on Friday November 28, 2008 at 10:00am. The period of mourning will be observed at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Scher 166 Normanskill Road in Slingerlands, NY on Saturday evening commencing at 7:00pm and on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday commencing at 1:00pm with a service each of those evenings at 7:00pm. Those wishing to remember Cecile in a special way may make memorial contributions to Congregation Ohav Shalom 113 New Krumkill Road, Albany, NY 12208 and to the American Heart Association 440 New Karner Road Albany, NY 12205.
