Obituary of Asa Kaplan

Asa Kaplan, 85, passed away at Ellis Hospital on December 8, 2018. He was born in March 1933 to the late Charles and Selma Kaplan. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1950, Brooklyn Polytech in 1952, and received his Master’s Degree from RPI. Asa served in the US Army as a Lieutenant in the Engineering Corps from 1952 to 1954. Asa had an outstanding career at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, having various assignments as a metallurgical engineer. He and his beloved wife, Judy, were married 62 years. Asa had an extensive stamp collection and enjoyed anything “family”, especially sailing with his children on Moreau Lake and traveling around the world with Judy.  Asa was always involved in his community. He served on the board of Temple Gates of Heaven for over 25 years in multiple positions. Always a passionate teacher, Asa taught throughout his career at GE, taught Sunday School at his synagogue, was a substitute teacher for Burnt Hills Schools in his retirement, and tutored students of all ages in mathematics. An ELFUN member, Asa volunteered fixing donated computers for schools and nonprofits. He lived an admirable life, and instilled fairness and respect for all people in all three of his children. His children are so grateful to have had him in their lives for so long. He was a mensch who will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and daughters, Pamela Kaplan (William Miller) of Brooklyn, Sheryl Kaplan (Greg Pogarsky) of Rexford, and son, Carl Kaplan (Lee Silverman), of Boston. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Marisa Miller, Ethan Miller, and Jared Miller.
