Florence Gerberg

Obituary of Florence Gerberg

Florence Gerberg died on October 10, 2018 at age 94, after a long illness. She was born August 1924 in Brooklyn New York, the eldest of two daughters of Edward and Rose Chudnovsky. She was the widow of Daniel Gerberg, whom she met shortly after his return from his WWII Army duty in France, and to whom she was happily married for over 65 years. As a young married couple in Brooklyn, Florence tended to their home – and later, to their first daughter – as Dan attended Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. Upon his graduation, they moved first to Ithaca and then to North Rose in Wayne County, New York, where they owned and ran a successful retail pharmacy, and where the family grew to include a son and second daughter. After 10 years, they moved to Bayside, Queens to be closer to family, and lived there happily for close to 50 years (while enjoying many winters in Miami Beach). In 2011, they came to Albany to live near their son and daughter-in-law.

Florence loved playing paddleball, which she proudly continued to do until age 89. She loved playing bridge with perhaps equal if not greater intensity. She was a devoted fan of professional tennis and an avid reader of the New York Times and mystery novels. She was a loving, nurturing and compassionate woman who shared affection, insights and support to so many in her orbit. She was also an intelligent and spirited woman who lived life on her own terms. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children Toby (Alan) Fleishman of Fort Lee, NJ, Joseph Gerberg (Barbara Dangman) of Albany, NY, and Amy Gerberg of Huntington Beach, CA, and by four grandchildren, Laura (Jeremy) Safran, David (Amy) Fleishman, Jonathan Gerberg and Rory Gerberg, and by four great-grandchildren, Ezra and Gili Safran and Jordan and Matthew Fleishman.

Services and interment will be held in the Mt. Ararat Cemetery, Lindenhurst, NY on Friday October 12, 2018. A local period of mourning will be observed at the residence of Joseph Gerberg on Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 2:00--5:00 pm and on Monday, October 15, 2018 from 5:00-7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Community Hospice of Albany or to Temple Israel of Albany.
