'Howie' was widely known in the world of commercial radio and TV, as well as amateur or 'ham' radio.
Howie was dedicated to old time radio programs, radio gear and shortwave listening. He loved all types of radio gadgetry and equipment - ancient and modern. Howie could lead a conversation in many directions. A fun and engaging guy at times, he could talk endlessly about many subjects. Howie enjoyed listening to old time radio shows, movies, and attending live concerts. He lived in South Carolina for a few years.
Howie spent a large portion of his career keeping various radio and TV stations on the air. In the Capital district he worked for both NPR radio and Public TV stations. He worked as FCC First Class Engineer for stations large and small - he loved them all. He was employed by country radio station WOKO, and later WMHT. In better days he could repair your little table top radio - or the transmitter of the largest stations.
As a ham radio operator, Howie's callsign was known far and wide. Over the years he was WA2AFD, W2AFD, W4AFD, and perhaps others. While certainly skilled at CW (Morse Code), his melodious voice sounded great on both short wave, and commercial stations.
Howie will be especially missed by Katie and Susan Duchnycz, as well as his circle of friends, nephews, one niece, and grandnieces and grandnephews, and the radio communities he loved to serve.
