I recall a discussion in Albany some years ago as to who in the kehillah might be a lamed-vavnik. There was unanimous agreement that such a person would have to be Salo.

It was a shock to lose Salo. He was one of the kindest, most decent human beings I ever met. The kind of person the world needs. He was genuinely caring and good in words and deed. I can't say enough about his integrity, decency and empathy. He didn't just believe we should help others, he acted on those beliefs all of his life.
I started working with him in 1984 but even though its been fifteen plus years since I saw him, I was told he donated much needed sick leave to me not once but twice in the last few years. And he would not let me thank him. But that was kind of man he was. But this was just a small, personal example of all the things he did to help others on a greater scale.
He was lucky enough to meet his true match in his wife Johanna, also a wonderful human being. They were the perfect couple with similar ideologies, and they acted on their beliefs, always ready to help their fellow men and women.
The world has lost one of its greatest souls.

Salo was a quality human-being. He mentored me as a programmer trainee decades ago. We worked countless projects together for many years. From him I learned to pay attention to detail, to never be over-confident about a solution and to always think of future scenarios. I can't count how many times I did something 'perfectly' only to have Salo calmly tell me what I'd missed. Saved my bacon many a time. Smartest guy in the room, but would never talk down to anyone. If this world were composed of 7.5 billion Salos, the planet would be at Peace and operating at peak efficiency.
Kind, patient, unassuming. Not just a co-worker, but a friend...I'll miss him. My sincere sympathies to his wife, Johanna, and to all of his friends and relations.

My sincere condolences to the family, I had many enlightening phone conversations with Salo while working with him at NYSIF. He was the guy that took the time to train me on how to use spool commands and always ready to help me when I encountered a printing issue I could resolve. He was very patient and helpful. I will keep him in my prayers.

I worked with him for about 30 years, first at 199 church st, then by phone and email when he moved to Albany. He was the go to person for all printing problems, always taking time to resolve the problem, and if he had to do research before answering, made sure to reply later; he did that even on his off days, using his cell phone. He was kind and generous, a true mensch.
We would speak of his mom and my dad, before they passed. He was a most dutiful son.
I and so many others will greatly miss him.

I was shocked to learn of Salo’s passing, this morning, when I got to the office. Over the years, I have had many an interesting, enlightening, conversation with him, every time coming away with new perspectives. I remember one, in particular, when I had mentioned my friend Rabbi Jacob Breuer from the Tannersville Orthodox community. I had told Salo about the many long, late night summer walks I had once had with Jacob; I was a bartender then, and would often go for a walk around Tannersville, after work, in the wee hours of the morning. I would periodically encounter Jacob, out strolling, and we had many long, fascinating, chats. Salo, it seemed, was a great fan of Jacob’s, who had been a very well regarded Talmudic scholar, and he was very pleased to know someone who had known him on a personal level. I will greatly miss my periodic discussions with Salo, not to mention his lovely smile and disposition. My sincerest condolences, to his wife and family.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Steper family. I will miss working with him and our quick chats whenever we ran into each other. As other coworkers have already stated, Salo had an amazing work ethic and knew processes in his area inside and out. He would often come up with scenarios that nobody thought of when deploying a project and ensure that measures were in place for everything and anything that could go wrong. I smile thinking about those days when we deployed a new check process because just when you thought you had everything covered, Salo would find a way to poke a whole in it. He was a joy to work with and I'll miss seeing his smile. The world lost a kind, compassionate man. My thoughts are prayers are with you.

I spent the past three years working daily with Salo. I can honestly say, I’ve never met anyone who loved the job more. Salo’s dedication could be a lesson to us all, he persevered through many challenges now matter how big or how small. Though our days were filled with work, we found time to discuss worldly issues and politics, Salo's view points were always carefully stated and thoughtful. Through these discussions and seeing Salo’s work efforts I feel I truly came to know him, as a kind, thoughtful and hardworking man. My deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Johanna and many family members, may Salo rest in peace for eternity.
