Obituary of Harriet Harris M.D.
Harriet Harris, M.D. 80, died unexpectedly on Sept 5th. Born in 1936 in Cambridge, NY and raised in Brooklyn, Harriet graduated in 1957, first in her class and first from her alma mater to attend medical school. She received her medical degree in 1961 from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn where she was one of only five women in a class of 100. She married her high school sweetheart, Stuart Winston on August 16, 1959. From 1964 through 1965 while expecting her first child, Harriet served as Chief Resident in Dermatology at New York University Medical Center. She was the first woman to hold that position, and remained on faculty until her passing.
In 1968, she established her private practice in Staten Island, NY where she continued to see three generations of patients until her retirement in June of this year.
Harriet was an accomplished painter and world traveler who had a great fondness for the arts. She was a member of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and many of the museums in New York City. She was a brilliant intellect who found joy in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the natural world. The place where she enjoyed herself the most was her
family farm in East Hoosick, New York.
She is survived by her husband, Stuart
Winston, daughter, Blair Winston Esq. son, Brion Winston M.D. and grandchildren, Helen Primack, Ezra Winston and Willa Winston. She was loved by an extended family, friends, colleagues and especially her patients. Her life was a blessing.
