I got to know Dr. Rettig while working as a clerical helper for her office through the Youth Opportunity Program in the early 1980s. I lived in a nearby group home and Dr. Rettig always encouraged me to do well in high school and to attend college (I did both and graduated from Williams College). Dr. Rettig was a very interesting woman. She was the epitome of the self made professional woman in an era dominated by men. She was very kind and had a huge heart.
One time she sent a letter on my behalf to the director of my group home after years of my being without an advocate there. That letter concerned a matter of restitution and got a written response from the director and instant results. Most importantly, I was treated very well by that children's institution thereafter. Only now do I realize that Dr. Rettig was my silent guardian angel!
I remember Dr. Rettig's tidy corner office and how she cared for her plants and the interesting and intelligent guests and friends who would visit her. I remember she worked for the emigration of people out of Russia during the height of the Cold War.
Dr. Rettig once uttered a single sentence of encouragement to me that was the most powerful motivating force in my life - to never give up hope. Finally, out of sheer coincidence, many years later I attended a summer semester of medical school at the same medical college she graduated from, (Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia). I found this out just today.
It's been 25 years since I last wrote to her, but Dr. Rettig will always be in my memory and in my heart. My condolences Ray, for your loss. I hope you are doing ok these days.

I was very saddened to hear of Judith's passing from my co workers today. She came into our library frequently and it was always a pleasure to see her. We would always have delightful discussions about so many topics....but mostly gardens. She admired the gardens at the library and would tell me about the gardens at her house. My sincere condolences on her passing. I will miss our weekly visits.

Dear Ray and Chris,
One could not ask for a better friend.
She was the quintessential optimist.
More interested in others then herself.
I will miss our conversations.
Answering her phone she would say "hi sweetie".
She meant more to me than I could ever express in words.
I love you Aunt Judith rest in peace.

I've known Judy for more than two decades. We had contact through Albany Medical Center when I worked there as a Lab Manager at the College and through Theater Voices as we served together on the board.
I felt we had a lot in common - science, public service and the performing arts.
Judy was generous with her time and herself, always a warm and giving human being.
I'm joining a very long list of people who will miss her!

Dear Family,
It has been a pleasure and an honor to know Judy through Theater Voices. She was a mentor for me in many ways such as serving on the board for TV, her experience and her wisdom, her kindness, ability to really listen, her fairness and flexibility.
She is a loss to us. But her integrity and values that she has imparted over the years
shine on.
Kind regards,
Francine and Steven Berg

Dear Ray and Christine,
My deepest sympathies and condolences. I last visited with your Mom about 30 days ago; we ended our visit with a "selfie" portrait that continues to bring a smile to me. As all my visits with her were a bright time of my day; always bringing a lasting smile and warm heart. She was always welcoming, her door always open! Time visiting with her passed quickly-as we enjoyed great conversation. Though I've heard much about you both over the years, she was equally interested in talking about what was happening in my life and my familys'. She faithfully offered moral support and encouragement to me both personally and professionally. I'll truly miss our visits. Fondly, Garry DeGonza

To Ray and Christine,
Though I;ve not met you, I have heard Judy speak about both of you in a tone reflecting the fact that you were ever supportive of her in so many ways. I have been a member of her book club for several years and , like all the others, have been in awe of her intellect and panoramic vision. I can hardly believe she is gone--so vibrant was she just a few weeks ago. I am writing from Chicago and have no idea of the circumstances of her death. I only hope it was swift and painless.
There must be thousands of memories that come to mind. May they help you find comfort at this time and always.
My husband, Rabbii Paul Silton, who worked closely with Judy especially during the renovation of Temple ISrael, joins me in sending our most heartfelt condolences on your loss.
May God comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Faye and Paul Silton
