Obituary of Allan Herkowitz
Allan Herkowitz, age 89 of Albany, NY died on Friday evening, September 25, 2015 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany. Born in North Adams, Massachusetts. Allan attended the Albany Academy and graduated from Albany High School. He was a Navy veteran and served during World War II. Allan had been the owner of the well known Playdium Bowling Center on Ontario Street in Albany for many years and later was employed by the Armory Garage. He was a member of Congregation Beth Emeth in Albany and its brotherhood. Allan will be remembered by his family for his wit, dry sense of humor, his sensitivity and his love for animals
Allan is survived by his loving wife of 66 years. Gloria Maistelman Herkowitz, 2 daughters, Dr. Lynn Deutsch ( Dr.Stephen Deutsch) of Silver Spring, Maryland and Sandra Herkowitz Kennedy ( Catharine) of Chatham, NY and his brother in law, Stanley Metzner and nephew Donald Metzner as well as many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eliot, Jacob, David and Dani Deutsch and great grandchildren Kayla, Zev and Eitan. He was predeceased in 1980 by his daughter, Ellen Herkowitz
Services at Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Road in Albany on Sunday September 27, 2015 at 3pm. Interment will follow in the Beth Emeth Cemetery in Loudonville, NY. Following the service of interment, friends and relatives are respectfully invited to visit with the family in the Community Room at the Avila, 100 White Pine Drive in Albany. Those wishing to remember Allan in a special way may make a memorial contribution to Congregation Beth Emeth or a charity of your choice.
Allan’s family wish to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the many friends for their kindnesses shown during Allan’s illness. A special thank you to Dr. Bruce Coplin, the staff at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, and special friends, Ed Sperber, Selma Heflich and Gloria Krimmer as well as Blessing Okie .
