Devera Ungerman

Obituary of Devera Ruth Ungerman

Devera Ruth Ungerman, “Deb”, Slingerlands. Devera Ungerman died June 12th, at home, after a short illness, while being lovingly cared for by her family. She was surrounded by them at the very end. Deb was a 1949 graduate of Phillip Schuyler High School, and worked for the State of New York for 32 years. She retired in 1994 as Executive Secretary to the Chairman of the New York State Department of Parole. There was never a misspelled word that she did not correct. Born in Albany on January 30th, 1932, Deb was predeceased by Betty and Harry Proskin, and her brother and sister-in-law, Theodore and Pat Proskin. She is survived by her brother, Arnold Proskin (Martha), and her adored cousin/sister Tobi Applebaum. Deb leaves behind the love of her life, Herman Mendell Ungerman, husband of almost 62 years, daughters Susan Ungerman (the late Gerard Bobersky), her companion Allan Greenberg, Michelle Sanders (Daniel), as well as her seven blessings Elizabeth, Lauren, Zachary, and David Bobersky, Benjamin, Jacob, and Rozara Sanders. Also, many remarkable nieces and nephews who remained close throughout the years. Deb was a proud American who also took great pride in her Jewish heritage. She also enjoyed picking wildflowers, gardening, crossword puzzles, bingo, and the color yellow. Most of all, she supported with joyous enthusiasm all of the pursuits of her cherished grandchildren. She never missed a sports event, a play production, dance recital, or birthday party. She considered her family the greatest success of her life. She was loved and respected by her community, and was honored to be visited by the people she most admired, Rabbis Lehrfield, Bomzer, Shpeen, Ornstein, Kieval, and Silton. Deb always had a kind word to say about everyone, and her spirit and desire to help others was endless. Words to describe her always include: gentle, compassionate, sincere, generous, and a diet free of butter, cheese, and margarine. The family would like to thank Community Hospice, with special acknowledgement to our nurse, Lindsey Smithers, for their support shepherding us through such a difficult process. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 14th, at 1:00pm at Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, 380 Whitehall Road, Albany, 12208.
