BARNETT A. ( BARNEY) EDWARDS
1923-2011
Barnett (Barney) Edwards, age 87 of Heritage Village in Guilderland, NY died on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in the Bronx, NY, Barney was a graduate of the DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx and NYU where he received his BS in History and his master's degree in Educational Administration. He taught Social Studies in the New York City School System He later became the Dean of Students at the Katherine Gibb School and was instrumental in initiating their associate's degree program. Barney wrote the curriculum for compassionate religion for the NYC High Schools. He was a decorated World War II Army Veteran and was the recipient of 2 purple hearts. Barney landed on Omaha Beach on D Day with the 29th Infantry. He was a mason and was a member of the Joseph Warren Lodge and the Brandeis Lodge.
Barney was an avid reader and enjoyed jazz music and opera music. The greatest pleasure in Barney's life was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lois Herschkowitz Edwards and his loving children, Adam Edwards and his wife, Rebecca of Altamont, NY and Eve Albert and her husband, Warren of Roslyn, NY. Cherished grandfather of Samantha Paige Albert (Sami).
Services at the Mt. Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY on Sunday January 23, 2011 at 11:00am. Those wishing to remember Barney in a special way may make a memorial contribution to either the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Albany, NY 12205 or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 501 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. The period of mourning will be observed on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 7:00pm a at the home of Adam and Rebecca Edwards, 10 Armstrong Drive in Altamont, NY with a minyan service commencing at 8:00pm.
