Obituary of Harriet Cohen
Harriet Rosenfeld Cohen, 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 10, 2011 in Jacksonville, Florida, at the McGraw Center for Caring, a residential site of Northeast Florida Community Hospice. She was born on August 11, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Troy, New York as a young child. With the exception of a brief return to the Bronx she lived the majority of her life in Troy. She met her late husband, Morris Albert Cohen in Troy and they enjoyed a marriage of over 50 years before his death in 2002. Harriet retired from the NYS Department of Education in 1989 and continued to enjoy having lunch with former colleagues.
Harriet was the daughter of the late David and Esther Rosenfeld and was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Rosenfeld. Survivors include a brother, Solomon Rosenfeld of Delray Beach, Florida and a sister, Dorothy Rosenfeld of Troy, New York, a daughter, Francine Cohen Parfitt and son-in-law, Robert G. Parfitt, of Jacksonville, FL and a son, Lanny S. Cohen and daughter-in-law Jeanine Paolicelli-Cohen, of Morristown, NJ. Harriet was extremely proud of her grand-children: David M. Parfitt, Bryan E. Parfitt, Jerra L. Parfitt, Abbegail E. Cohen, Madeline C. Cohen and David A. and Nina R. Paolicelli. Survivors also include several nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in- law, cousins and a multitude of friends including the Monday afternoon poker group which has been convening for over 35 years. Harriet was known for her wit, love of family and enjoyment of her time with her many friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 AM on Friday, January 14th at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, followed by interment at Beth Tephilah Cemetery. The family will welcome guests at Hearthstone Village Clubhouse, 4000 Florence Drive, Latham immediately following. Traditional shiva observance will take place at 3205 Florence Drive, Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Harriet's name to Mayo Clinic Florida, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL or to the Simon Wisenthal Center which was one of Harriet's favorite organizations.
