William E. Block, PhD, age 87, died at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, Albany, NY on Monday, March 5, 2012. He was born on September 4, 1924 in New York City to Rose (Silver) and Leo Block. He graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a degree in aeronautical engineering and then served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. Upon returning from the Army he attended New York University and received his doctorate in clinical psychology. He was on the psychology faculty at Yeshiva University and then St. John University. He later worked at the Rockland County (NY) Mental Health Center and then in private practice with his wife Phyllis in Cranford, NJ. William was a member of the NYS Psychology Association.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Phyllis (Friedler) Block and his daughters Holly (Alan) Fox of Guilderland, NY and Caryn Block (John Kalamon) of Pipersville, PA.
William was predeceased by his sister Libby Block.
William's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Stephen Hillinger for his kindness and skilled care and the support from the NYOH staff. Special appreciation goes to the caring and compassionate staff of the green unit at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 9 AM at Levine Memorial Chapel, Inc., 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY with burial following at Old Montefiore Cemetery, Springfield Blvd., St. Albans (Queens), NY. Shiva will observed at the home of Holly and Alan Fox on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 7 PM to 9 PM and Sunday, March 11 from 2 PM to 4 PM.
