Obituary of Marvin Dwore
NISKAYUNA, NEW YORK
Dr. Marvin Dwore, a long time resident of Niskayuna, NY, passed away on
Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Ellis Hospital surrounded by family.
Dr. Dwore was born in Schenectady, NY, the son of Abraham and Anna Dwore, on
August 10th, 1917. He was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, Union
College, class of 1939, and received his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from
the Tufts University School of Dentistry in 1946.
A man of sterling character, he maintained a private dental practice in
Schenectady for nearly 46 years during which he was a caring and dedicated
professional. He provided dental care in many instances to multiple generations
of local families. He was a life member of the Schenectady County Dental
Society, the Fourth District Dental Society, the New York State Dental
Association, the American Dental Association, and was a past President of the
Schenectady County Dental Society.
Dr. Dwore proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army's
Dental Corps and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War.
Over the years he maintained close ties with Union College where he was active
for decades in alumni affairs. He was one of several extended family members to
attend Union.
He was a long time member of Congregation Gates of Heaven, in Schenectady.
Dr. Dwore was well known in the area as an athlete, primarily for his tennis
accomplishments. In his youth, he was regarded by tennis authorities as one of
the best young players to come out of the east coast in years. He was many times
Schenectady County Junior Tennis Champion, New York State Boys Singles and
Doubles Champion, Captain of both the Mont Pleasant High School, and Union
College Tennis teams, and won many area and regional tournaments. He also served
as the Head Coach of the Union College Tennis Team following his graduation.
Dr. Dwore was a member of Shaker Ridge Country Club for nearly 63 years,
continuing a family legacy at the club dating to its founding in 1929. He served
on the Board of Governors for many years, as Chairman of the Greens Committee,
and won numerous club golf tournaments including the Club Championship, and he
was Senior Club Champion several times. He co-held the course record at Shaker
Ridge for several years.
Dr. Dwore is survived by his cherished wife of over 70 years, Estelle Sommers
Dwore, of Niskayuna, his son Bob, of Saratoga Springs, his grandchildren, Sam,
of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Hannah, of New York City, his brother in law and
sister in law, Donald and Miriam Sommers of Albany, as well as numerous nieces
and nephews, all of whom he loved deeply. He was predeceased by his beloved
son, Dr. Richard Dwore, as well as his brothers George and Sidney Dwore, and his
sister, Esther Dwore Roses.
One of the last true gentleman, he will be remembered as a wonderful husband,
devoted father, uncle, and grandfather who was always there for his loving
family. His family brought him the happiest moments of his life and his best
times were the ones spent with his family and friends.
Services will be held at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue Schenectady at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December
21, 2010. The family will observe shiva at the Dwore residence on Tuesday
evening.
