Eli Backer, age 102 of Woodland Avenue in Schenectady died suddenly on Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after being stricken at his residence. Born in Russia, Mr. Backer resided in Syracuse, NY for several years, later moving to Schenectady where he resided most of his life. Eli was a graduate of the Nott Terrace High School, RPI and the University of Alabama. For many years, Eli and his family owned and operated the former Swan Cleaners in Schenectady which had many locations.. Mr. Backer was a well known land developer and was involved in many building projects throughout upstate New York. Some of his projects included car washes, gas stations and many retail plazas. Eli and his family also owned and operated the Country Squire Motel chain with several locations throughout the state. He was an Army veteran and served during World War II. Eli was an associate life member of Hadassah and a former member of Congregation Agudat Achim in Schenectady.
Eli was married to Etta Kohn Backer until her passing in 1975. Loving Father of Susan Backer Alfred (Larry) of Guilderland, NY and Dr. Jeffrey Backer and his wife Helene of Niskayuna, NY. Grandfather of Aubry (Stephen), Jennifer, Michael, Elliot, Rebecca and Diana. Mr. Backer was predeceased by his brothers, Isadore, Kalman, Louis, William and Simon Backer and sisters, Helen Strisower and Doris Novelle. Eli also leaves his canine companions, Dre and Miss Shuggy.
Services at the Beth Israel Cemetery Chapel, Abbottsford Road in Rotterdam, NY on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 12:30pm. Interment will follow in the Beth Israel Cemetery. The period of mourning will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings commencing at 7:00pm at the Backer residence, 1264 Cranbrook Court in Niskayuna, NY and on Sunday evening commencing at 7:00pm at the home of Larry and Susan Backer Alfred, 224 Bentwood Court West, in Guilderland, NY. Those wishing to remember Eli in a special way may make a memorial contribution to Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street Schenectady, NY 12309 or Hadassah.
