Obituary of Sylvia Katz

KATZ Aventura, Florida Sylvia Katz,age 87 of Aventura, Florida died on March 15, 2010. Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 1, 1923 she married Harry Katz in June 1943, who she was married to for 53 years until his passing in 1996. They met when she was 16. She was a model at the 1939-40 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows and continued to model at various events following her move to Lynbrook Long Island, where she lived until 2001. Sylvia later moved to Aventura, Florida. Sylvia fought a valiant battle against four different types of cancers, the first of which began in 1979, and endured chemo and radiation treatments for many years. Despite these challenges, she developed a very successful antique business, Chestnut Hill Antiques and later becoming Sylvia Katz Antiques, starting from doing flea market shows to such prestigious antique shows as the Park Avenue Armory, the Pier Antiques Show both in New York, the Miami Beach Antiques Show, the Las Vegas Antiques Show along with many others. Her passion and love for antiques remained throughout her life and Sylvia was selling antiques until just one week prior to her passing . However, far more than her love for antiques was Sylvia's love for her family, her pride and joy for them, and she persevered to live her life to the fullest for them. She is survived by her three children, Gene ( Howard) Tarler of Albany, Michael ( Jill) Katz of Alparetta, Georgia and Barbara Katz ( Frank Valls) of New Orleans,Louisiana, three grandchildren; Sam Katz, Rebecca Katz and Matthew (Marilyn)Tarler of Cleveland. Sylvia was predeceased in 1997 by her grandson Ken who passed away at age 28. She is also survived by two great grandchildren, Gavin Tarler and Grace Tarler. Funeral services and burial was on Long Island on Friday, March 19. Shiva will continue at the home of Gene and Howard Tarler, 35 Fairway Ct. Albany, NY on Sunday through Wednesday from 11:am to 4pm and from 6:30pm to 9pm. Evening minyans will be at 6:45pm.
