Obituary of Clara Perlmutter
CLARA CAPLAN PERLMUTTER
Clara Caplan (Kai) Perlmutter, 97, of the Beverwyck Community in
Slingerlands NY died Thursday morning, February 9, 2012 at her
residence. Daughter of the late Charles and Lena (Corbat) Caplan,
cherished wife of the late Julius (Julie) Perlmutter, beloved mother of
Carol (Leonard) Hershkowitz (Houston) and Leonard (Jenness) Perlmutter
(Averill Park), adored Grams of her loving and devoted grandchildren
Jill May (Paul) and Jonathan Bloomberg, Great Grandma to Samantha and
Tessa Rose May, loving former mother-in-law of Carl Bloomberg and close
companion of the late Ben Hershberg. Clara was predeceased by her four
siblings, Esther Werlin, David (Dubby) Caplan, Jacob (Jack) Caplan and
Robert Caplan. She is also survived by caring cousins, nephews and
nieces. Born in 1914, Clara lived her entire life in Albany. She
graduated from Albany High School and the Albany Business College, and
attended Columbia University and Maria College. Clara was a life-long
member of Hadassah and a congregant of Temple Israel and Temple Beth
Emeth. In the early 1950s Clara was active in the Albany PTA and helped
coordinate the city's polio vaccine program at P.S. 19. After the death
of her husband, Julie, she enjoyed working for 18 years at the N.Y.S.
Assembly. Throughout her life Clara had a deep passion for progressive
causes--always supporting the less fortunate. She enjoyed playing golf
and following the careers of her favorite professionals. Clara was a
staunch advocate of taking care of herself both physically and
mentally. Her daily practice of meditation and yoga was an inspiration
to her children. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude
to Albany Hospice, Mohini Chaturi (her devoted caretaker), Andrea Gonzalves, Alice
Baker, RN and Dorothy Roohan. Thanks also to Bruce Coplin, MD and Larry
Perlmutter MD for their many years of devoted care and attention, and
to Roberta Miller, MD of Homedical Associates for her extraordinary and
compassionate care that extended the quality and enjoyment of her last
years.
