1922-2009
Chelsea, Massachusetts
Ernest Wasserman, 92, beloved father, grandfather, and brother of Albany, died on December 9, 2009 in Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home. He was Born and raised in Schenectady. Mr. Wasserman lived in the same house in the Mt. Pleasant section of Schenectady for over fifty years, first as the son of Tillie and Joe Wasserman, and then while he raised his own family with his loving wife, the former Jeannette Bloch of Lynn, Massachusetts.
While serving in the Army, Mr. Wasserman was stationed in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. He fought the remainder of the war in the European Theater. After the war, he returned to Schenectady and worked for over twenty-five years at Capitol Paint & Hardware in Schenectady.
He was a longtime member of Temple Gates of Heaven and a member of its Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Albany Chapter of the Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Wasserman was a voracious reader who instilled the joys of reading in his children and grandchildren. He was a committed father and grandfather who enjoyed nothing more than being with his loving family.
He is survived by two children, Sara Richman, of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and Lee Wasserman of Riverdale, New York, and five grandchildren; and by his sister, Lois Bluestein of Schenectady, and brother, Robert, of Ithaca, New York. He is also survived by his beloved, Thelma Gerwitzman.
A memorial service will be held at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street in Schenectady on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11:00 am.
