MURRAY D. SHABOT
1921-2009
TROY, NEW YORK
Murray D. Shabot, 88, of Troy, passed away on October 19, 2009 surrounded
by his family at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY. .
Murray was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 9, 1921, son of David
and Mary Shabot. He enlisted in the Army during World War II
under General Patton and was wounded in action during the invasion of Messina, Sicily. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery in action.
He settled with his beloved wife of 63 years, Lily, in Troy and was the owner of Harper's Jewelry in downtown Troy and Kent Imports in Albany for decades.
Murray was known as an avid golfer with 5 holes-in-one during his life and the first to bring a golf cart to Frear Park.
In addition, Murray loved his caretaker Maria Basulto. The family is grateful to her for the sincere and loving care she provided. The family is also grateful to the staff at the VA hospital for their compassionate care. Also, Murray loved kids, music, and dancing. He had a special love for his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He never missed a chance to take all the kids for rides on the golf cart. He touched all generations, especially his great nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife Lily Franco Shabot, his children Merril Buchhalter of Southboro, MA, David Shabot of Ambler, PA, and Robert Shabot of Kamuela, HI; also 4 grandchildren, Michael Buchhalter, Cari Shabot, Mollie Shabot, and Michael Shabot and 2 great grandchildren, Harrison and Marley Buchhalter. He was predeceased by his brothers Abe, Jack, and Dick and his sisters Vicki, Jean, Rose, and Molly.
Servicess at Temple Beth El 411 Hoosick Street Troy, NY on Tuesday October 20, 2009 at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in the Beth El Cemetery on Belle Avenue in Troy, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth El 411 Hoosick Street, Troy, New York 12180.
