Obituary of Robert Louis York

1929-2009
Robert L. York , 1st Sgt. US Army Retired, died on Thursday evening October 8, 2009 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany after a lengthy debilitating illness. Robert died surrounded by his loving family. Born December 9, 1929 he was the youngest of 12 children born to Nellie and Joseph York in Erie, PA.
He served 20 years in the Army, serving both in Korea and Vietnam and earning numerous awards and medals including the Bronze Star.
After retiring from the army, he joined The Galesi Group as Chief of Security for Northeastern Industrial Park for many years. He then joined his wife's family in the laundry and dry cleaning business - opening a store in Troy, NY, which he and his wife operated for a number of years.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years Rita (Rosenthal) York and his loving daughters Debbie (Jeff) Cohen of Slingerlands and Shannon (Butch) Bastiani of Altamont and grandchildren Jessica and Ashley Cohen and Jordann and Clayton Bastiani.
In addition to his New York based family, he is survived by two sons, Bruce and Doug and one daughter, Kathleen and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of Cleveland Ohio.
He is also survived by five sisters and one brother- all of Erie, PA
Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue Albany on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 12 noon. Interment will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY
Robert's family extends a very heartfelt thank you to all of the staff at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center especially the devoted staff of the Gold Unit. The Gold Unit Staff treated Robert and Rita with tremendous respect, care and love, which was truly appreciated by the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to be made to the Daughters of Sarah JewishFoundation in Robert's memory at 180 Washington Avenue Extension Albany, New York 12203. The period of mourning will be observed at the Cohen residence , 24 Cayuga Court in Slingerlands, New York on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
