Obituary of Leo Nonkin

LEO NONKIN 1915 -2009 ROTTERDAM, NY NONKIN Leo Nonkin, 93, passed away Wednesday July 22, 2009 at his home with his family by his side. Born in Albany, NY Leo was the son of Julius and Rebecca Nonkin. He attended Albany Public Schools. He worked as an upholsterer in the Capital District for many years until he retired in 1981. Leo joined the National Guard in 1940 and then served 5 years in the US Army during World War II. He spent three and a half years in the South Pacific before he was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He was a member of the Rotterdam Democratic Club, the Hildebrand Davis VFW Post 1895, and the Rotterdam Senior Citizens Club. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy ( Diamond) Nonkin, his daughters Joyce Nonkin and Debra Nead, and son-in-law Richard Nead. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by 4 brothers, and 4 sisters; Raymond Nonkin, Benjamin Nonkin, Morris Nonkin, David Nonkin, Ida Block, Rose Schechter, Betty Tinkle, and Alice Victor. Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Friday July 24, 2009 at Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery Chapel, Abbottsford Road, Rotterdam, NY.
