Obituary of Sidney Harold Katz
SIDNEY H. KATZ
1913-2009
SLINGERLANDS, NEW YORK
Sidney H. Katz, age 95, of the Beverwyck Community in Slingerlands, NY died on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY. Mr. Katz was born in New York City and graduated from the Dewitt Clinton High School in New York where he excelled in high school art. He later attended City College of New York where he studied education. During World War II, Mr. Katz was an instructor in celestial navigation for the Army Air Corps. He had also worked for the State Dept. of Taxation and Finance for three years. From 1956 until 1991 Mr. Katz owned and operated Marlan Decorators on State St. in Schenectady. His firm specialized in custom draperies, slipcovers and upholstery. Mr. Katz taught art and created portraits at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany. He also taught art at the Colonie Senior Center and the Beverwyck Retirement Community. He served as a facilitator for the Beverwyck Book Club. Sid was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge and painting with pastels. He was a member of Congregation Gates of Heaven in Schenectady. Sid will be remembered as a man of keen mind, innate dignity, modesty and great strength of character.
He was survived by his wife Florence Hyman Katz, a daughter Marilyn Brock and her husband David of Williamsville, NY and a son Alan and his wife Bette Katz of Sparks, NV. Grandfather of Jason Katz and his wife Phieng, Andrew Katz, Lauren Brown and her husband David and Joel Brock. Great grandfather of Julia Brown. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Shirley Auerbach of Slingerlands, NY as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Ave., Schenectady, NY on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Watt Street, Schenectady, NY.
