Obituary of Melvin Sontz

MELVIN SONTZ 1924- 2009 SONTZ Albany, New York Melvin Sontz, age 84 of Sparkill Avenue in Albany died on Tuesday June 23, 2009 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany. Mr. Sontz was born in Albany and was a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian Kain Sontz. Melvin was a graduate of the former Philip Schuyler High School in Albany. He had been employed by Enterprise Rental Car Company and had owned a scrap company at one time. He was also employed in various other businesses in the Capital Region. Melvin was a Veteran of World War II and served in the Coast Guard during the Invasion of Normandy. He was also an avid pool shooter. Melvin will be remembered by his friends and family for his joke telling and his great sense of humor. Melvin was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Anne Malik Sontz. He is survived by his loving companion, Beverly Gershen and her son Craig of Albany as well as Craig's dog Zues. Father of Marvin J. Sontz of Glenmont, NY. Step father of the late Jack Malik. Brother of Ronald Sontz and his wife Mary of Albany and Norman Sontz and his wife Joan also of Albany. Grandfather of Hannah Sontz. Uncle of David Sontz, Joey Sontz (Rosie), Michael Sontz, Beth Sontz, and Karen (Steve) Cole. Great uncle of Sean and Ryan Sontz and Sommer Ashley. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue Albany on Thursday June 25, 2009 at 10:00am. Interment will follow in the Gerald B. H. Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Those wishing to remember Melvin in a special way may make a memorial contribution to the Stratton VA Medical Center Kidney Department or Cardiology Departments, 113 Holland Avenue Albany, NY 12208. Melvin's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Scherzer, Dr. Hsu as well as his nurses, Lisa and Melissa at the VA Medical Center, Floor 8B as well as all other medical personnel and staff on 8B for the kindnesses and care extended to Melvin during his stay. Melvin will also be remembered by his love and devotion to his companion Beverly Gershen.
