Dear Rena and family,
We were so sorry to learn of Dan's death. What a loss for our community and for our family in particular. Dan has been a most loyal friend to 3 generations of Robbs - my parents, my siblings and me, and even my children whom he met with at length to discuss school projects over the years. He was generous with both his time and himself. If our goal is to make the world a little better place, he certainly succeeded. Thank you Dan for giving so unstintingly of yourself and thank you Rena and the rest of the family for being so supportive of his efforts.
Quite simply, he was a good, talented and honest man!

Dear Rena and family,
The Whalen family will be forever grateful to Dan for creating the record of Tom's time as mayor of Albany in his book, "Take City Hall!". Dan's impeccable research and engaging writing style stand as testament to his fine intelligence and fierce dedication to getting the details right. We are saddened by Dan's passing yet are uplifted as we think of his many contributions to the history and culture of the city of of Albany.
In gratitude,
Denie and family

Dan and I worked together in the 1980s during a mutual foray into the world of book publishing (I had previously worked at the Knick News, but not when Dan was there). He was something of a mentor to me, and I recall fondly commuting together and sharing stories during the ride and over the wall of our side-by-side cubicles. Like Dan, I made my way back into the newspaper business and now work at the Web site of the Times Union. I miss Dan's wry smile and cunning wit, and especially his sage advice. My heart goes out to you, Rena, and to your family.

Dear Rena

It was such a pleasure working with Dan in Delmar back in the 80s and getting to know both of you. Dan was such a gentleman and such a model for the rest of us. A great craftsman and a caring journalist. I never knew him in his political days, but he was always even handed and fair at the Spotlight.

He will be missed.

Tom McPheeters

I have many fond memories of Dan Button. Right after I graduated from high school, I got a job working for Mr. Button. This was a newly created position so I found myself multi-tasking and often feeling very over-whelmed. Mr Button always treated me with great respect and kindness and I will always remember him for that. A true gentleman! He will be missed.

Dear Rena, Nancy and David,

I am proud to have worked as a reporter under Dan when he was editor of the Times Union.

Dan's rare personal courage
became plain for all to see when he gave up his position at the paper to take on the entrenched and corrupt Albany political machine of that time. His election to congress continues to be inspirational.

Dear Sally and Family,
I was so sorry to hear the news. I still remember when our elementary class was given a tour of the old Times Union plant by Sally's Dad. I also remember the exciting night in 1966 when Dan was elected to Congress. My Mom was a campaign volunteer and we were invited to be at campaign headquarters on State Street to hear the returns. Those were exciting times! Of course I also shared a close friendship with Sally as school classmates right through our HS graduation. He will be missed!

Dear Button Family:
Dan was such a great guy. A wonderful, warm, honest, courageous, and wise man.
We got to know each other shortly after I moved into the area in the early '90's. I had known about him before that, because I was a student at Union College in the '60's when he ran for Congress. So it was pretty special for me when I came to know him years later. He was at the SPOTLIGHT at that time, and he had enlisted me to write a column--and then did so periodically. He was an absolute pleasure to work with. And he was fascinating--his stories, his knowledge, the lessons learned, his insights, and always his honesty and courage.
We spoke fairly regularly throughout the '90's and would occasionally have lunch together. I loved his company and his friendship.
We lost touch the last few years. But I often spoke about him with great fondness whenever his name would come up in conversation.
I will really miss him. Even miss just knowing that that wonderful man was still around.
My thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family,
Vin
