Obituary of Ruzena Katz

Troy, New York KATZ Ruzena Katz, 90, of Troy, NY passed away at home January 22, 2009 after a long illness. Born February 11, 1918 in Drauce, then part of Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of Ignatz and Sali Simonovitz. Rose worked as a social worker in Europe until WW II. A survivor of the Holocaust, she came to the United States in 1947 and settled in Albany where she worked in her brother's grocery store, the Trading Port, where she met her husband Erich Katz, who she married on October 16, 1949. After moving to Troy in 1954, Rose became a homemaker and devoted her energy to providing a loving home to her husband and daughters. A talented craftsperson, Rose enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and needlework. A remarkable cook and baker, Rose was well known for her kitchen expertise.. She also loved to garden. A lifelong member of the PTA, Rose was also a proud member of the Troy Woman's Club and Birchkill Arts and Crafts Guild where she had many dear friends. Her family would like to thank all who helped in her care including Cardiac Rehab at Seton Health, Rensselaer County Hospice and most recently Jean Endryck with Palliative Care at Seton Health. A loving, and much loved wife and mother, she's survived by her husband, Erich Katz of Troy, her daughters Evelyn (Steven) Greenstein of Troy and Margaret Katz of Troy and her two cherished grandchildren Ezra and Maya of Troy, as well as several nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers and sisters: Helen Zorn, Morris Simonovitz, Desider Simonovic, Flora Tabachneck, and Giselle Simonovitz. Graveside services will be held at the Beth Tephilah Cemetery on Belle Avenue in Troy on Sunday January 25, 2009 at 12 noon. A period of mourning will follow the service at the Beth Tephilah Synagogue , 82 River Street in Troy In lieu of flowers, donations made to Palliative Care Department of Seton Heath at 1300 Massachusetts Ave, Troy NY 12180 or to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated. Rosie will be greatly missed.
