Hillard A Sutin (1915-2008)
Hillard A. Sutin of Albany, New York passed peacefully at the age of 93 on October 12, 2008 at The Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family.
Hillard was born in Albany, NY to Fannie and Morris Sutin in 1915, the youngest of six children. He attended Albany High School (1933), graduated from The University of Michigan School of Mechanical Engineering (1937), and he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society. He worked as Chief Mechanical Engineer in New York City and then in Philadelphia for Ingersoll Rand on defense-related contracts. With the start of the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Aircraft Engineering Officer, repairing and maintaining military aircraft in Burma, India. After two years, he was reassigned to the Air Transport Command in Washington D.C., where as the Executive Officer, he oversaw the 45, 000 personnel throughout the world assigned to the Maintenance Engineering Division. Hillard achieved the rank of Major and was honorably discharged in 1946.
After almost four years in service of this country, Hillard moved to Albany and worked briefly as an engineer at Albany Castings Company in Voorheesville. He then moved to Rochester, where he was a partner in M.J. Fitzsimmons Manufacturing Corporation and shortly thereafter, he wed Ann Bakrow of Rochester (1946). Later, he partnered with Linsley Fischer to form Standard Supply Hardware Corporation, which he sold in 1960. Hillard then returned to Albany to work for his brother William, the owner Cromwell Printery. Following the sale of Cromwell, Hillard founded Capitol Microfilm Services Inc. in Schenectady, which serviced many needs of General Electric and the company became one of the largest microfilm production houses in the tri-state area. Hillard sold his business in 1982 to enter retirement. Although Hillard's passion was his family and friends, he also enjoyed reading, playing tennis and bridge, and volunteering for charitable causes. Although well into his retirement years, Hillard continued to learn new skills, including use of the internet to learn about history, politics, and business.
Hillard is survived by his loving children, Judith A. Sutin, MD of Buffalo, NY and Ken Sutin, MD of New York, NY, and his nieces and nephews.
