Dr. Handelman was my professor for sophomore differential equations at RPI in the mid-1980's. I have fond memories of him and his lectures. I remember him as being thorough in his explanations while being approachable as well. RIP professor!

I am indebted to Professor Handelman for providing a sensitive and creative atmosphere of learning in the Mathematics Department at RPI. He was always available when help was needed, providing valuable advice to me at times when I was sorely in need of a thoughtful and caring ear. I will always remember and be grateful to him. Please accept my profound sympathy in your loss.

Dr. Handelman surely did "define himself as a teacher". Many graduate students from other disciplines, I among them, regularly sought to audit his courses for the pleasure of hearing his lectures and to add to their understanding of mathematics. He always graciously allowed them to audit.

Dear Marcia,
I want to remember George with deep affection and thank you for being two of the most influential people in my life. I could go on and recite the ways he helped me grow as a scholar and teacher- but that would just duplicate messages from his many students and colleagues.
What I remember vividly was blueberries and cream at your place in Wellfleet in the 60's when
I was working on my dissertation and his call to me just a few days ago when he was worried that I might be swept away by a hurricane.
My thoughts are with you and the girls.
Love, Bob Sidman

Mrs. Handelman, I am so sorry to hear that Dr. Handelman passed away. I have so many fond memories of growing up next door to you. Seeing him go up Clinton Place walking the dog, in all kinds of weather, smoking his pipe. I know he will be missed by many, he was a true gentleman.
