Obituary of Alexander Gort
Alexander S. Gort, age 103 of Delmar Place in Delmar died on Thursday morning, June 12, 2014 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mr. Gort was born in Kurima, Czechoslovakia to Hannah ( Krauss) Goldstein and Herman Goldstein. At the age of 13 he relocated to Kosice to live with his older brother David, and completed secondary school there, subsequently earning a J.D. degree from Charles University (Prague) in 1935. He served in the Czech army, subsequently practiced law, and left Czechoslofakia in 1939 after the Nazi invasion, staying in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal along with his friend Rev. Blahoslav Hruby. Arriving in the US in 1941, marrying Marie- Henriette Messing in 1943 , obtaining his Accounting Degree from NYU and CPA license and building an Accountancy practice. His strong self -reliance coupled with an inextinguishable sense of humor, and respect for others contributed to his longevity.
He was predeceased by his wife in 2001, his parents and younger sister, Miriam who were murdered (Treblinka) in October, 1942, and by his other siblings Ernest, Simon, Hermione, David, Rudolph, Leo and Michael. He is survived by his son, Dennis (Lynne), granddaughters, Nancy Gort, and Heather (Michael) Mullins, great grandsons Dylan and Brandon Mullins, his sister-in- law Edith Goldstein, and many nieces and nephews. The family is deeply appreciative of all the care he received, especially at Atria Delmar Place, and through Community Hospice.
