Obituary of Martin Alan Hershenhorn
Martin (Marty) Hershenhorn, 67, passed away Tuesday from complications during surgery at Ellis hospital.
Marty grew up in Rochester, NY, but lived in Yonkers and New Rochelle most of his adult life. He graduated from Kent State University and was a Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War. He was employed his entire adult life in New York City for Veterans Affairs until his retirement. He loved to travel, especially on cruises and managed to see the world on a ship. He also loved the theater and treating himself to fine dining.
After having a stroke two years ago, he moved to Schenectady. He was surrounded by people who loved him, family, friends and the staff at Wynwood.
He is survived by his sisters, Linda (Edward) Silverstein of Silver Spring, MD and Ellen (Ken) Carpenter, as well as his nephews, Scott and Andrew (Arielle) Silverstein, Aaron (Angela) Carpenter and his niece Sarah (Chuck) Hunt. During the past two years, his real joy was his great nephews Benjamin, Caleb and Ryan.
Services will be held Thursday, January 9 at 1:00 PM at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union St., Schenectady, NY.
A period of mourning will be held at the home of Ellen and Ken Carpenter, 1170 Phoenix Avenue, Schenectady from Thursday through Tuesday evening. Services will be held Thursday and Sunday through Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Special thanks to the staff at Wynwood Assisted Living for making his new home comfortable and welcoming. The staff always treated him with dignity and love.
