Dear Neal, Marcia and Family,
We're so sorry we weren't with you last Thursday. We don't get the Times Union any more, and didn't find out until Friday.
Unfortunately, we hadn't been in touch with Sumner for a while, though we thought of him often. Bailey hasn't been well since last Fall, and is taking a long time to recover, so we're quite limited. And the current situation with the coronavirus doesn't help.
Sumner was quite a guy! We enjoyed our occasional lunches with him at Beverwyck, and were always amazed at how sharp he remained. It was a real pleasure to talk to him, and discuss the problems of the day, of which unfortunately there were always many.
He was such a presence, it's hard to believe he's gone.
We hope all your memories of him, and of course, of Mildred too, will be a comfort to you now. He was so proud of you all!!
Fondly,
Rabbi Bert and Bailey Bloom

Sumner was my mom's first cousin and in 1989, for the first time, I'd meet Sumner, Mildred, Neal and Marcia. This family visit was pre-23and Me, so I was very excited that we'd meet in person, even for a few hours. I remember that afternoon so fondly! Fast forward, Sumner would e-mail my mom and me, I would say seasonally-and we became
"e-pen-pals." We'd catch up and happily Sumner would correct my speling mystakes! Sumner was old-school, a gentleman, a scholar and always prideful of his awesome kids, their equally awesome spouses and ALL of his fabulous grandsons. I appreciated the sensitive Sumner who e-sent to me such special greetings cards. A few months ago, Sumner and I exchanged what would be our last e-mail - and I included my picture that's posted here. I knew there'd be snowy days ahead for Sumner...I just hoped he would enjoy my view. Sincerely, Jan

As a secretary at Star Textile and a divorced mom going to Siena at night to complete my bachelor’s degree, I had the great good fortune to be the beneficiary of Sumner’s friendship, encouragement and help with my math homework. He was truly the brightest person I have ever known and his kindness, humor and goodness were a gift I will always appreciate and remember. His family has has my deepest condolences for the loss of this remarkable man.

Dear Neal, Juju and family -
My heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father. I would have loved to have his help with a few New York Times crossword puzzles! We owe him much gratitude for his grit and determination as he fought across the French countryside and at the Battle of the Bulge, during World War II.
I know you will think of him often, over the next several months. When you do, I hope most of your memories of him are your happiest and most meaningful times together. Jack and I will keep you in our thoughts.
Warmly -
Betsy Busch
