In 1949, 22 year old Estelle Novick was a first grade teacher at School No. 17 in Troy NY. There, under the supervision of austere, old-fashioned Miss Mary Kelly, principal, she taught us how to read. Miss Novick was so pretty, glamorous, and fresh, that all of the 6 yr old boys fell in love with her. One of them recently confessed to me that he was so enamored, he would secretly kiss the seat of her chair.
In recent years, Miss Novick was a long term resident of the Eddy Heritage House on Tibbits Avenue in Troy. She continued to be glamorous with designer eyeglasses, stylish makeup, hair and nails. Some of the staff affectionately called her "Hollywood". She had a sharp sense of humor and would always have quick, funny, and acerbic repartee for everyone.
Rest in peace, Miss Novick, we still love you.
