Brian Sherman was a wonderful man. We first met in June 2006 as he was poised to become the new Superintendent of Schools for Schoharie Central School District. Gail with also with him. Brian expressed how pleased he was at his appointment. Over the course of the next weeks and months, he formulated goals and objectives to lead the school district forward to educational excellence. In time, our close and cohesive working relationship also developed into a supportive friendship. There were restaurant meals, Yankees games, plane flights, museum trips, photography lessons, home computer and TV installations. That's the way Brian was. He was open and approachable. He also formed other close friendships with colleagues at the school district. There was nothing beyond his ability to come to the aid of a friend in need.
Brian was an inspirational leader and developed a loyal following of educators.
Brian was a devoted family man. He often talked with joyful pride about Gail and Alex, and then about Lisa and Evelyn.
After Brian retired in 2014, we still kept in touch though not as much as we would have liked. We did have a great gathering of Schoharie retirees at a restaurant last August that was fantastically enjoyable and memorable.
May the bright light that Brian Sherman brought into our world be continued through his family and vast following of friends.

Brian acted as an interim principal at Schalmont Middle School where I taught. He made an effort to find common ground with everyone he encountered and his interests were broad. My husband and I frequently crossed paths with him and Gail at Proctors Theatre and we sometimes chatted about the shows we’d seen. I had no idea Brian had been ill. My sincere condolences to Gail and Brian’s family; he made no secret of his love for you.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to know Brian has passed. Brian mentored me and became a friend. We enjoyed kayaking together and Brian loved to talk to me about the family he loved, his love of flying and of course, technology. I tried to stay in touch, but Brian was always a busy guy. I am sure he is still very busy and watching over Gail and his family from above. My memories of Brian will always be of happy thoughts.

I had the privilege to work very briefly with Brian when he was an interim principal in my building. He was a kind gentle man, very creative, and listened when people spoke. My sincerest condolences to his family and close friends. A great loss indeed!

“Me Sherman” will be remembered by me as my favorite teacher at Geyser Road Elementary School. He would make an effort to connect with each student and make them each feel loved and inspired. I remember playing chess with him often and he actually let me win on one occasion. I also remember Gail coming to school and demonstrating belly dancing with a group of women. Squirt gun fights, Bronx zoo trips, and field days were some other great 6th grade memories Mr Sherman made special. May he Rest In Peace.

We are so sorry for your loss! Mike and I were lucky enough to have Brian as our principal during our first years as teachers. We have so much appreciation for the patience and guidance he showed us. More than anything, his constant good humor was a source of joy; his office truly was a safe space to land with any teaching “catastrophe” we encountered. With wonderful memories of Brian and heavy hearts, we’re sending love and prayers to you and your family, Gail!

Know that you are in our hearts and prayers during this difficult time. We had the good fortune of working with Brian and Gail in their Indian River Days. Although time has passed, we have always remembered Brian as a gifted educator and an even better person. Brian's strong leadership helped guide us through our early years and develop us into the people we are today.
With love and gratitude we share our condolences with the family.

My sincerest condolences go to the family and friends of “Mr. Sherman.” In 1985-86, I was lucky enough to have him as my 6th grade teacher in Saratoga Springs. He had a special way of connecting with the kids and sparking their imaginations. I remember his love of flying and how he incorporated it into the classroom so we loved flying too. At a time when technology and computers were just beginning to become the norm, he was always a step ahead. He inspired a whole generation of computer and gadget geeks, myself included. Many of the fondest memories I have of elementary school were from the year I spent with him. In fact, I just told my own 6th grade class YESTERDAY that he was my favorite teacher and I wish I could tell him. I am sorry I never had the opportunity. Thank you Mr. Sherman. You were one of the teachers that made a difference for me. You will be missed.

I have always thought of Brian as full of life and energy, and quietly passionate about his interests and those he loved - his family. I am just so sad and shocked to hear of his illness and death. He made an impact on the staff, students, and friends around him -more than he probably realized. I remember dance lessons (no one could keep up with Gail), trying to kayak on the small river behind the house in Evans Mills (of course he ran into some 'bad boys' from his school along with way), and fun parties when Gail opened the home to everyone - including the Swanson Delivery man. What a wonderful, fun couple and times. My heart is with Gail, Alex, and all his family. Lynn
