It was an honor serving with Eric at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York. His professionalism as a pilot, on numerous missions, was always visible. A truly skilled aviator as well as a wonderful friend, mentor and colleague. He will be forever in our hearts and minds.

So sad to hear of Eric’s passing. Though I did not know him very well, he was usually present at many of our family get-togethers. Eric was kind and generous and had a resume that is just amazing. Will be at cemetery on Monday. Godspeed, Eric! You are in God’s amazing hands now! Love: Marlene Hays ❤️

This is Eric’s father Monroe and his wife Danelia. She helped make Eric’s life so much better by loving and taking care of his Pops at all times, she’s a very generous and beautiful soul.

Eric was a kind and gentle man. That part of his character just shined through. He was well liked and respected for his knowledge and his ability to share that wisdom without making you feel like a lesser human. He will be missed and spoken of fondly by his fellow Disaster Assistance Representatives here in Albany for many years to come.

Eric had a great sense of humor from as far back as I can remember. One he visited us when we were living in California and I was in elementary school. He was driving a VW bug. With what I perceived to be great seriousness, he showed off the very unusual features of the car. First, he said that it had no engine, and sure enough when he opened the hood up front, it was completely empty. Then he proceeded to explain how it ran on a big rubber band. Sure enough, he opened the trunk, and clear as day, there was a great big rubber band (fan belt) back there, just like a giant toy car. (If you understand VW Bugs you will get it.) He had his own unique kind of snicker and laugh that gave away that perhaps he wasn’t quite as serious as I had thought.
I think that trip was the same time that he rented a small plane and flew our family (dad Harry, mom Sally, brother Bruce and me) to Columbia, CA, a small historic gold rush town for a short day trip. He even let dad fly the plane for a while. Dad was also a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. I was pretty proud to have an older brother that could fly a plane! Years later I got to see him fly a C5 into McCord AFB (now JBLM) near Seattle where I now live. That was an impressive sight!
I enjoyed getting to know Eric once I became an adult, which Bruce explained a bit. I found out that we shared many of the same interests, including electronics, hi-fi and computers. It is a shame that we lived so far apart. We enjoyed our time together we were able to get together, but I regret not being able to get together more often. I am proud that we were brothers and I will miss Eric a lot.

Eric, I and many other military pilots treasured your friendship and expertise as we served along side you during our careers. I know God is now your copilot as you fly your last mission to heaven. May the sky be clear and the winds calm as you ascend. I will never forget our wide ranging lunch discussions over the past two decades.

My earliest memory of Eric is when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old, visiting Eric with my mom, dad and brother Dave. Dave and I slept on Eric's living room floor in sleeping bags. In the morning, Eric grabbed our sleeping bags, lifted us up and carried us around as Dave and I laughed with pure delight.
On other visits, as a teen, I enjoyed conversations with Eric, Dave and my dad about electronics, hi-fi, all things Heathkit and Dynaco. Eric always seemed to be an expert at whatever topic was at hand.
Sadly, I failed to keep in close contact with Eric for many years. That changed, thanks to my wife Helen, when we made a trip to New York City for our anniversary in 1997. Helen suggested we get in touch with family in the area. As it happened, Dave was in NYC on business, and Eric met us there. We all enjoyed reconnecting, spending time together chatting over coffee or a meal.
Since that visit, we have enjoyed many "family reunions," getting together at Eric's house, or at Mom & Dad's, Dave's or my house.
I will remember Eric as always upbeat, knowledgeable, honest and, as I said, fun. He will be dearly missed.
