I was perusing the obits yesterday when I saw the name of Stanley Solomon of Albany, and something rang a bell. I served with Stanley in the Marine Corps Reserve. We served in the same platoon (platoon 389) on Parris Island in the fall if 1963. I'm 78, and a grad of Syracuse U. and joined with some friends. Stan and I were the ONLY Jews in the platoon of probably 40 or so marines, and being the only Jews we naturally bonded. He was a truly great guy and good marine. A couple of Staney stories.
Stanley, if I remember, had one leg a little shorter than the other so when we had to stand at attention in front of the drill instructors, Stanley was slightly leaning to one side. The drill instructions would tell him to stand straight, and when he tried and failed they would belt him. (In those days in the Marines circa "63, we all got punched around.) Stanley, after getting smacked a few times, would lift one leg a little so he could look straight. The Drill Instructors didn't buy it, and Stanley bravely put up with the abuse.
The second story: Since Stanley and I we're the only Jews in the platoon, when Rosh Hashonah came, we were permitted to leave the base to go to services-it was a rule, they had to let you. The drill instructors were against us leaving the the base (or having anything that resembled a break from their abuse), and Stanley in particular, was warned not to go. I do remember-boy this was over 50 years ago, he said "f-it" we're going, and off we went-a great time was had by all.
So sorry for you're loss, but remembering Stanley brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
regards, Ken Pearlman

Dear Amy and family,
We are so sorry that you have lost a wonderful man whom everyone thinks of as smiling, warm and friendly. My walks were made more interesting the times I would stop and Stan and I would have a long conversation. We covered many topics because Stan was such an interesting conversationalist with much knowledge and many diverse interests. Yes, many interests, but often seeing him outside with the family, it was easy to see where he derived his greatest joy.

I first met Stan in synagogue at a Minyan service that I attended to mourn and say Kaddish for a friend of mine that had died tragically. Although the circumstances for attendance that day were heartbreaking for me, immediately, I loved Stan. And he is honestly what I remember most about that Minyan service. He introduced himself to me and mentioned that he knew my family located in the Albany area. He had a beautiful smile and held the Torah strongly and proudly as I read an Aaliyah. Any time I have been in Schul since, Stan has been there too. He always gave me a great big warm hug, and once again, a lovely smile whenever I saw him. I have a special place in my heart for minionaires, as my father is one in Atlanta, and he is also the big strong "Stan" of the group, holding the Torah up for all to see. I am so truly sorry and heartbroken to hear that Stan has passed away, and please know that he left an impact on many, including me. I send loving thoughts and condolences to your whole family and I am so sorry for your loss.

We've been Stan and Amy's neighbors for more than 10 years. They've been very kind and welcoming to our family from the moment we moved in. Stan was always friendly, genuine, and ready with a wave and a humorous story. An all around truly good person that we will greatly miss seeing on our block.
Our condolences to Amy, Marcy, Melanie, Scott, and the whole family.

For well over 30 years Stanley was like a brother to me.The times we spent together and with our families are way too many to list but will certainly keep Stan in our hearts forever.
We must have played close to a thousand rounds of golf together,so I have lots of stories.Like the Monday he got a hole in one at Colonie on the 7th hole. There had been a tournament earlier that day and the 7th hole was the hole that gave away a car. After we got to the green and retrieved his ball from the cup,he looked at me and said”if we played an hour earlier,I would have a new car now”
Stan will be sorely missed at the club....if you couldn’t find him, that’s where he was.He was a fierce competitor and extremely proud of the fact that at some point,he won every tournament the club had,at least once. But more important,he played with honor, dignity and respect because that’s who he was.Admired by every one who knew him as a hard worker, caring friend and devoted family man.
Amy was his world.I never knew a man prouder of his wife than Stan. And the sun rose and set in Scotty,Mel and Marcie. The look on his face when the grandchildren were at the house was priceless.First he would try to control their excitement. Then he would look at me and say, give me a Crown Royal.
Partner, confidant, helper,a friend you would call first when you needed one,how do you replace somebody like Stan.....you don’t!You just keep him alive thru the memories and he left us so many.....love you Brother....see you on the back nine....

Stanley was a second cousin of my mother's (Hilda OBM). Stanley befriended my father when he moved from Utica to Albany. He was there for my mother when my grandfather passed and later for my father when my mother passed away. I remember Stanley for his his humor and people skills. He will be missed. My (our) deepest condolences to Amy, Scott, and the rest of his family and our extended Solomon and Schlusberg families.
