Obituary of Sylvia Horowitz

Sylvia Horowitz, 84 of Hallandale Beach, Florida, died on September 9th, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born to the late, Gussie and Louis Lass on January 1, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York. She met Benjamin Horowitz and married him just before he went off to the India/China/Burma Theatre in World War II. When he returned from the war, they began raising their family on Long Island in North Bellmore, NY. Simmy and Ben raised two children, Sandie and Howard. Simmy was instrumental in helping run Ben's car wash business on Flatbush and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn. Later she, Ben and her son Howard, ran a very successful bagel and coffee business at the Aqueduct and Belmont Flea Markets. In 1999, she moved to Florida full time and later became President of Imperial Towers North Condominium Association in Hallandale Beach. She was president for nine years and was known to run the building with an iron hand. She worked tirelessly for the residents of the building and always had their best interest in mind when she made the tough decisions. She remained on the board until this day. Simmy had a quick wit, a shrewd business sense and always kept you on your toes whenever you were in her presence. She was known to be a great cook and her potato kugel and kasha varnishkis will surely be missed. She is survived by Sandie Vipler and her husband Howard of Clifton Park, New York, grandson Benjamin Vipler, M.D., and Fiancé Erin Davidson, M.D., of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Lydia Horowitz, and grandson Theodore Naima (Lauren) of Long Island, and great grandchildren Ella and Ethan Naima, along with nieces Marcie, Pamela, Cindy, Sheryl and nephew Barry. A graveside service will be held at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, on September 12, 2013 at 1:00. Those wishing to remember Simmy may make a donation to Congregation Beth Shalom, 688 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
