Winter Ends
Steadily falling, like a mountain stream
in early spring,
the future relentlessly crashes into now
. . . becoming the past.
But death, alas,
marks a kink in that continuum.
I am verklempt.
One frigid day in March you fell
a fatal fall.
Mark Klempner, oh gentle man,
(oh sabbath bride),
I knew you when, although not well.
You were too young to die—
but aren’t we all?

Dear Diane, David and Michaela
I was truly shocked to hear of Marks’ death and wanted to write to express our sincere condolences as well as share some of the happy memories we have.
Mark was a truly great man, a thoughtful and fascinating friend. My children Alice and Danny and I first met Mark in the library of Blue Valley School where we shared long discussions about children’s literature and all of the best British authors.
He would always be happy to point out all the latest new acquisitions in the library and introduced us all to some fabulous titles. He was of course far too modest to tell us about his own published work and I just happened to stumble upon ‘The Heart has Reason’ by chance, and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
What struck me more than anything is how incredibly proud he was of you David and Michaela and the enjoyment he took from seeing you thrive in everything that you were doing. In our recent correspondence he had filled me in on your role in Macbeth Michaela, and David’s soccer successes.
I hope you can take some comfort during this difficult time in knowing how loved your dad was, and know that if you are ever in Costa Rica you can look us up to share some happy memories.
Best wishes,
The Higginson Family

Mark and I were close friends in high school. He was heavily into music and I was into drama. I admired his freedom and easygoing attitude, especially when he would hitchhike to hang out with the Hudson River Sloop crowd of Pete Seeger and Don McClean. We lost touch but reconnected in the past few years through Facebook. Mark stayed at my house in LA on his way to a workshop with Cheryl Strayed, and then when my father was in the hospital in Costa Rica, Mark hosted me at his place. We suddenly became 16 again, playing the guitar and singing together, and reading poetry until all hours. Last year we met up near Greenfield and took a hike. We would talk by phone a few times a year, and it was always as if no time had passed. He cared passionately about his children and seemed like a caring father. My condolences to Diane and David and Michaela. Happy journeys dear friend!

Dear Diane, David and Michaela,
I was shocked to learn this morning of the passing of Mark. He and I had been emailing since he returned to the US and were planning to meet soon. It's hard to imagine this could have happened to him. I met Mark many years ago when we lived in Ithaca, NY. He was a wonderful musician and such a kind and compassionate person. I remember him singing the beautiful songs he wrote accompanying himself on his guitar. Over the years, we followed each other on Facebook and I was looking forward to seeing him again in Boston.
My deepest condolences to you all. I know you must all be devastated and I send my love and prayers.
Yours, Carole Charnow

Mark and I (as Head of Blue Valley) enjoyed deep conversations that developed into a friendship we both greatly enjoyed. I was happy that he could follow his children to the US and we were looking forward to meet in New York in May. I was going to invite him to Russ and Daughters and he was looking forward. Only memories now, but good memories.
