Obituary of Doris Galek

Doris Galek, 91, of Albany, passed away in her sleep on Monday evening, January 7, 2019

 

 

Doris was born on October 2, 1927 in Lodz, Poland and was the daughter, along with her younger sister, Sylvia of Izak Perlmutter and Helen ( Chaya) Wolfman,

 

She is a holocaust survivor whose work in the factory in the Lodz Ghetto kept her family alive with her family. After being liberated, Doris moved to Paris with her family where she met her husband Jack Galek and they were married in 1948. In 1949, they sailed to America and were sponsored by her husband’s cousins, the late David and Pearl Bray. They had a daughter, Helene, and soon ran a successful business, Kenmore Cleaners on North Allen Street. Doris was very active in Congregation Beth Emeth along with her husband, she was c-o President of the Sisterhood, volunteered at the soup kitchen and did much work with Hadassah and B’nai B’rith as well.

 

When she and her husband retired, they sat in at classes at SUNY, went on Jewish Study Retreats in the Catskills, and spent winters in Sarasota, Florida and enjoyed visiting New York City. Doris loved great literature, art, music, especially classical, opera and musical theater, witty humor and provocative films and plays. Her husband, Jack, predeceased her almost 2 years ago to the day.

 

 

Doris is survived by her daughter, Helene; her sister, Sylvia Rozines; and her nephew, Gregory Rozines; and had the honorary title (Great Grandmother to the caregivers and their children who made her last years special until the end

 

Private services will be held.   Donations may be made to Congregation Beth Emeth or the United States Holocaust Museum in DC.
