Obituary of Riva Huz
Riva Huz, age 91, passed away on November 2, 2018, at her home in Brooklyn in the company of her loving husband Paul. She was born on April 12, 1927 and spent her youngest years in a small town in what is now Northwestern Ukraine, called Hulivka. When the war overtook her region, she survived by being hidden by her neighbors and in the forest with a group of anti-Nazi partisans who actively resisted the occupation. She and husband of 71 years married in a displaced-persons camp in Bari, Italy where their daughter Shulamith was born. Riva, Paul and Shulamith and Riva’s mother, Chaya, began their new life in America in 1949.
Riva’s focus was on her family. She built a warm Jewish home for Paul, Shulamith and her son, Steven. She also welcomed her brother, Ezra, into the home and was devoted to her sister, Jenny, her brother-in-law Ike, and their children. She cherished and had much pride in her grandchildren. In her last years she enjoyed visits by her great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face.
Riva was deeply affected by her wartime experience and would often recall her life in Europe. She will be remembered as a gentle, caring, kind and modest soul who nurtured those closest to her. Her grandchildren will always remember the cookies she baked for them and her delicious chicken soup and kasha varnishkes.
Riva is survived by her beloved husband, Paul; daughter, Shulamith; son, Steven (Sharon); her grandchildren; Aaron (Katy), Joseph (Krista), Sarah (Marcus), Jonathan (Sarah) and Ilana; and her great grandchildren; Matthew, Gabriel, Lola, Zemirah, Robbie, Rosie and Amita. She is predeceased by her parents Sholom and Chaya Feyga Singal, her brothers Beryl (Dov Ber) Singal and Ezra Singal; and her sister Jenny Schachter
