To the children of Martha ‘Marty’ Farber:
My husband Bernie Zapf and I met your mom when she lived in the Central West End of St. Louis during her Ophthalmology residency and subsequent role as Chief Resident, a role she was proud of as the first female chief resident in ophthalmology at Washington University School of Medicine and one she took very seriously. Marty hosted many parties for her residents and a good time was always had by all. She and I had our first child about a month apart and we bonded quickly. Your mom never ceased to amaze me-she would operate on eyes all day, come home and do some dry wall taping (better than any contractor) and then invite us over for dinner where she made her homemade fettuccini and fresh pesto from basil she grew in her backyard. She was a superwoman to me and a role model I could never successfully follow. In later years she would return to St. Louis occasionally for a conference or meeting and we would get together at one or other of her favorite blues venues. She would update us on all of you as she was so proud of each of you. I just learned of your loss today and was flooded with fond memories but with a sense of profound sadness. Your mom was a remarkable person and I’m sure she has passed on much of that to all her children and grandchild. My heartfelt condolences for your loss.

To the thousands of patients Marty treated, she was their beloved doctor. To the many thousands of Veterans she did not treat but whose best interest she defended, she was their unsong hero. To the trainees she protected as if they were her own kids, she will always be their mentor and role model. For the colleagues who admired her and sought her opinion, she was a brilliant, generous mind, their leader.
To me, Marty was not only a brilliant intellect but a beautiful human being, she who fought for social justice and equality, a loyal supportive friend, who gave without holding back. I am privileged for knowing her and considering her my friend. If there was ever a wonder woman, it was Marty. She could do it and have it all.
Marty's most important role however, was as a mother. She adored her family and put them above all.
During her too brief time on this earth, Marty accomplished more than most. She will be missed and forever loved.
With a broken heart, I extend my condolences to those who loved, admired, respected her and her beloved family. My heart goes out to all.

I met Marty more than 15 years ago when working to improve resident education at Albany Medical College. I will always remember her dedication and devotion to the training experience. Somehow she balanced the numerous responsibilities and roles with a perpetual smile. She will be missed.

Please accept my condolences on your loss of a beloved mom, grandma, sister, friend and stellar physician. Martha was a classmate of mine, ‘68, at SCS where we shared the common, at times trying experience, of a parent on the faculty. In Kindergarten I remember Martha had the most wonderful braids! In high school, she was a friend and most gifted student and, as I can attest to, a gifted Math tutor. Our lives diverged after high school so while it is a blessing to know that her life was filled with a lovely family, friends and rewarding career it is a sorrow to know of your loss.

It is with deepest sorrow that I express my condolences to the Farber family, Mark, David, and Sarah.
Dr. Farber was a dear friend for over 20 years, as I worked for her at the VAMC in Albany, New York. Her warmth, kindness and understanding of humankind will live forever in my memory.
Her staff were like family to her, and I cherish many memories of us together, enjoying each other's company outside of work.
She enriched the lives of all who knew her. May God bless and keep you, as you lay to rest your mom, who was loved by so many.

I was so very sorry to see the announcement of Marty's passing. For many years she has been someone I admired from afar both as a stalwart of VA Ophthalmology and someone who selflessly committed to the furthering of our profession on the American Board of Ophthalmology. She leaves behind huge footprints which will be very difficult to fill in our profession and even more so in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her. May her memory be for a blessing for all those suffering.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about Marty's untimely passing.
Marty has been a loving, dedicated, and loyal friend since we first met in Medical School in September 1974. It was then that I came to appreciate her genius and humanity.
Our hearts go out to the entire family during this most difficult time.
Marty's passing should not be sad. Warm memories including her great medical and surgical skills, intellect, wisdom, compassion, righteousness, humor, and infectious laugh will forever comfort us all and continue to enrich our lives. Her legacy will live forever.
She will surely be inscribed in the book of life amongst the righteous.
With love and peace,
Aron and Roger

Dr. Farber no doubt touched many lives in her line of work. She will surely be missed by family, patients and coworkers. We are so sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in family and friends (Proverbs 17:17). For additional strength, may you find it in God who cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Please accept our deepest condolences.

I served as a doctor of optometry for thirteen years under Dr. Farber’s supervision at the Stratton VAMC until my retirement this past June. She showed great conpassion when I was seriously injured in an accident in 2008. I learned a great deal about treatment and diagnosis of eye disease from her,
