Obituary of Edith Lewis

Edith Lewis, 90, passed away peacefully on July 23rd. Edith was born in the Bronx on December 29, 1929, the daughter of Bessie and Joseph Weil. She was the sister of Gladys Slone; aunt of Sherrie (Gary) Hickey, Jay (Barbara) Katz, Charlie (Barbara) Norwalk, and Carole (Irving) Friedman; and mother of Charles (Kathryn) and Larry (Ricki). Edith was the beloved wife of Benjamin, who predeceased her. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.

Most importantly, “Mama Edith” was a beloved grandmother to Heather (Kenneth), Sarah, and Carly Lewis. She was present for every important moment of their lives, welcoming each into the world, driving upstate often to be with them, and making chicken soup when needed. She accompanied the family on an unforgettable trip to England in 1996, where she chatted up everyone she met. She selflessly moved nearby to Scotia soon after and became part of the local community. When she moved to the Massry Residence and then Daughters of Sarah nursing home, she brought along her trademark sharp wit, sense of humor, and funny stories and commentary that made everyone laugh with her and love her. These qualities never faded. Edith was a devoted mother to Charlie and Larry, and like a second mother to Ricki for many years. She will be missed.
