Obituary of Barbara Phyllis Smith

Barbara Packer  Smith of 7 York Road, Glenmont, NY passed away on Saturday 5/12 at 10:30 AM after a long battle with cancer.  Barbara was born and raised in the Bronx, NY by her parents Dr. Gerson Packer and Regina Packer, attended the University of Michigan and Skidmore College where she majored in English. Barbara worked for over 20 years in various capacities for the State of New York most recently as the Assistant to the Commissioner of NYSERDA. Barbara was very active in the community including Hadassah where she was past president of the Northeastern NY chapter.  

Living in the Albany area, Barbara was a patron of the arts and frequently attended Saratoga Performing Arts, Tanglewood, and other community theaters.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Martin Smith who died in 1991, and is survived by her longtime partner for more than ten years, Marvin Kahn.  She leaves behind her three children, Susan Smith Cohen and her husband Mitchell of Glenmont, NY, Jeffrey N Smith and his partner Mark Schoonover of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Stephen Smith of Jersey City, NJ, her brother Dr.Marvin Packer and his wife Judy of Newton, Mass.  Barbara has three grandchildren, Aaron, Alyssa and Emily Cohen all in Glenmont, NY.

Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue in Albany on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 1:30pm  followed by interment in the Temple Israel Cemetery on Western Avenue in Guilderland, New York. Memorial donations in memory of Barbara may be made to Hadassah or Community  Hospice
