Bernie was a valued friend and colleague during his years in Boston. We both came up in our respective professions out West.
I was very sorry when he departed for Albany, sad to hear that he was ill, and I am even sadder now that he has left us. If I had known about his burial in Pittsfield on Wednesday, I would have been there. I'm sorry.
My sincere condolences.

Bernie was such a gentleman -- so cordial and charming! He loved all aspects of the Library and was very attentive to the volunteer tour guides and would give us fantastic behind the scenes tours. He was agreeable to some ideas I had about the Library and was instrumental in installation of an important mural of notable women of Boston in the General Library/Johnson building. He was so kind to write a letter of introduction for me when I was in France so that I could get into the closed Biblioteque St. Genevieve. My sincere condolences to Amanda and the family.

Dear Amanda, my condolences to you and your family for your sad loss. I was active in the Friends of the Honan-Allston Library, a BPL branch in Boston when Bernie was president. He was accessible to us and supportive of our work. I appreciated and enjoyed him when he regularly came to our events in the evenings and on weekends. I remember him fondly. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. I hope that knowing he made had a positive impact will be of comfort.

One of the BEST librarians I met at ALA when I started attending in 1974 was a man named, Bernie Margolis. I remember the day as a new ALA councilor that I moved we cut the ALA conference by one day and Bernie, sitting next to me, seconded it. There were those that were not very happy with this proposal but Bernie knew the Bylaws and he walked them through all of it so they finally agreed we really needed to do this to help our conferences be shorter and help cut costs. The irony of all of that is that today, we are again trying to find ways to cut costs and still know our colleagues around the country and world and provide the training, learning and practicing we need as librarians.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
Kay K. Runge, Director Emeritus, Des Moines Public Library.

Amanda,
I worked at the Monroe County Library System from 1978 to 1980, so I didn't know Bernie as well as the rest of the staff. However, I know they all kept in touch with you and Bernie, and were always sharing his accomplishments with the rest of us.
The ladies are heartbroken at the loss of this great man, and I know he will not be forgotten.
My condolences to you at this time.

Bernie guided me with his vision, enthusiasm, energy, and humor toward being a better librarian, a better educator, and an advocate of life-long learning. Prayers for the family. He is well-remembered.
