Obituary of Esther L. Lewis
Lewis, Esther L., 89, of Loudonville, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at her home. Born in Albany, September 8, 1923, she was the daughter of Harry Levin and Charlotte Katusky Levin. She graduated from Albany High School, attended the College of Saint Rose, and Parsons School of Design, before marrying Nahum H. Lewis in 1947. A lifelong activist, Esther was involved with Planned Parenthood, Family Planning Advocates, the League of Women Voters, Hadassah, and the University at Albany Center for Jewish Studies. She received numerous awards for her commitment to these organizations. She enjoyed piano, skiing, the arts, travel, gardening, and yoga.
Esther's husband predeceased her in 2003. She is survived by her children, Samuel (Sarah Elizabeth), Naomi (Charles Apkarian), and Daniel (Jan Fleischner); six grandchildrenCharlotte, Nathaniel, Jacob, Sophia, Hannah, and Rebecca; and 1 great-granddaughter, Olivia. She is also survived by her brother, M. Joseph Levin. She was devoted to her family, and was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to many.
Services at Congregation Berith Sholom, 167 3rd St., Troy, NY, on Wednesday, June 12, at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow. The family will receive visitors at Esther's home on Wednesday, June 12, and Thursday, June 13, from 6-8PM. Contributions in Esther's memory can be made to Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, 855 Central Ave., Albany, NY, or a charity of one's choice.
