Obituary of Allen Yarinsky
Allen Yarinsky (May 6, 1929May 18, 2013). Brother, husband, dad, uncle, grandfather, friend.
Allen Yarinsky made a career in pharmaceutical research. He spent 23 years at the Sterling Winthrop Research Institute where he directed a research program in tropical diseases and then built and directed the Department of Quality Assurance. From 1989-2007, Dr. Yarinsky served on Albany Medical Center's Institutional Review Board. He also taught clinical practices to pharmaceutical professionals.
Dr. Yarinsky received a B.A. at the College of the City of New York in 1951 and M.S. degree from Columbia University's School of Public Health in 1953. Following two years in the U.S. Army, where he participated in biological warfare research, he earned a Ph.D. in Parasitology from the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health.
Allen Yarinsky is survived by his wife of 60 years, Estelle; their three children, Steven (Pamela), Carolyn (Myron), and Adam (Amy); ten grandchildren, David, Michael, Alexander, Julia, Nathan, Henry, William, Jacob, Gabriel, and Anna; and his sister, Sondra.
With his family and friends, Al was lively and full of fun. He could be feisty but also good-natured. When the family moved to Delmar, in the 1960s, Al brought along stickball, the tradition of his Brooklyn childhood, with annual games of the Delmar Darlings. A child of the Great Depression, he was thrifty and planned a secure future for his family. Al seemingly invented the recycling movement, habitually reusing rubber bands, string, plastic bags, and cardboard boxes.
An avid street photographer, Al also recorded his children's lives in work that filled many albums. Later, Al travelled the world with Estelle, and exhibited and published his insightful and beautiful photographs of the people he saw.
To his children, Al offered enthusiasm for their endeavors, serving as a mentor and cheerleader. He spoke with hope of the future. To his grandchildren, the home Al made with Estelle was a place of joyful familial gathering, particularly for Passover and Hanukah.
The family thanks the staff of St. Peter's Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Albany. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite charity.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11:00am Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Road, Albany. Interment will be Tuesday in the Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn, NY.
