We are deelply saddened by your loss. It's too difficult to comprehend the way things happen. We cried because we can't see Dr.Smith again but at the same time we priased the Lord that Dr.Smith is taken by the Lord the way he planned.
We will cherish our memories of the times we spent together and keep our learning in our hearts about God.
Our thought and prayers are with you.

Dear Joan and children, Howie Smith Professor Howie Smith was my boss for 11 years , second opinion ,mentor and friend. If medicine had a category past distinguished professor it would be " rock star" and that is the category Dr. Smith would be. Board certified in internal medicine, radiology and anesthesia, expert in addiction medicine, pain management, palliative care, prolific writer of books, journals, editor in chief of a pain journal, researcher, voracious reader, globe trotter in the lecture circle, Professor Emeritus , physician, teacher, and all around nice guy. I was at a conference last year with him, and this time he was not a presenter, he was referred so may times that he was asked to come out of the audience to join the panel and he did. His patience was boundless, he would listen to patients , you could see his attention to detail , it was as if he could feel their pain and tried to help everyone. He never refused to help any one. If Howie had one weakness it was to fresh baked goods. He loved his sweats and cherished each bite. He also had a love/ hate relationship with the computer, he loved the ease of the computer but hated to learn the technology; therefore he hand wrote all his lectures and had them typed. Howie was a scientific detail man , he would forget to get a hair cut, or the dry cleaning but never forgot a family function . The children's soccer games, school activities, family holiday dinners, birthdays and recent college visits. He was proud of the family he and Joan had and talked of their futures. I will miss his ability to explain complex concepts and reduce to a level easily understood, his infectious laugh, sense of humor, ability to care, his life long philosophy of being the path of least resistance, and his ability to make it seem better. Dear Mrs. Smith, dear Smith family! We are deeply shocked to hear the sad news that reached us via Korea. It was merely 2 weeks ago that we first met Howard on the occasion of the Spinal Pain Conference in Busan. He was of course known to me as the outstanding academic that he was, but I had never met him in person before. My wife Selmar and I were deeply impressed by his kindness, his friendly and open way and his intelligence. We shared several good and stimulating conversations with him during these short days and we will miss him. Please accept our deepest condolences! We feel with you and we will mourn with you. Howie has been our colleague, and more importantly dear friend. Not only did Howie helped the immediate members of our family with our own health issues, but also with extended family and friends from other areas. Additionally, when these folks ended up at AMC, it was not unusual to find Howie visiting them in their rooms, after his own long day of work. If someone didn't understand a health issue you could always count on him to explain in terms that could be understood. His kind and gentle manor made even the most difficult situations bearable. Professionally many people will think of Howie as a gifted MD. While this is certainly true, I will always remember him as a true scientist and researcher. His tremendous insight, knowledge base coupled with clinical experience, and thrust for "how things really work", made him very unique and special. Moreover, as hardworking as Howie was, he always had quality time to spend with us. His sense of humor could brighten a room in no time flat. Not a week went by where we were not laughing at our evening dinner table about a simple joke that Howie had cracked. We all were simply on the same wavelength. Howie could take a joke as well! We were always teasing him about taking our homegrown eggs. For Valentine's day Lori and Howie wrote messages on all the eggs of that day for Howie to take home. A simple thing like this would make us all laugh. We miss our kind, giving, compassionate, patient, dear friend.

Howie was a man who made me smile whenever I saw him. He never had a cross word and he was so very giving. When my mother was killed Joan and Howie were amazing--always there to help and when my sister took ill Howie was there and helped her. I truly am happy I got to know Howie and I am better for it. Joan, you are a very strong woman and you have a wonderful, loving family and together you will all make it through this. Much love to Joan, Joshua, Alyssa, Eric and Ben. You are in our prayers.
